A fuel tanker fell from the Otedola Bridge in Lagos, Nigeria, and caught fire on Monday 19 October 2026, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria’s road safety agency, said. The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is a main road out of Nigeria’s largest city, so Americans visiting or working in Lagos should expect delays.
The FRSC says two people were injured, but one newspaper headline speaks of two deaths, and The Rio Times could not confirm any deaths. Below we set out what is known, what is not, and what it means for US readers with ties to Lagos.
What We Know
The tanker was carrying diesel and other petroleum products from a depot, and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) put its capacity at 33,000 litres. It fell from the Otedola Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway into the underpass beneath it, near the Berger area, and caught fire.
The FRSC called the incident a lone crash on the outward section of the expressway. Its Lagos Sector Command put the time at about 4:10 pm local time, which is about 15:10 GMT.
Other agencies logged the incident a few minutes later. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it received an alert at about 4:24 pm, so we give a range of around 4:10 pm to 4:25 pm.
Premium Times reported that the fire service received a distress call at 4:09 pm. Firefighters from the Alausa and Ikeja stations arrived at 4:16 pm, and the fire was put out, with crews staying on to deal with residual hotspots.
The FRSC rescue unit arrived at 4:20 pm, according to a statement issued by Sector Public Education Officer Elizabeth Jayeola. The statement said two adult male occupants were injured and taken to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre.
The FRSC added that no fatalities were recorded in the initial crash report. Its preliminary findings identify speeding as the reported cause of the crash.
Lagos Sector Commander Kehinde Hamzat said speeding is a serious threat, especially for tankers carrying fuel. He urged drivers not to speed and asked the public not to approach burning tankers to film them.
LASEMA spokesperson Olawale Afolabi confirmed the fire and said the agency’s Tiger team had been deployed. LASTMA managed traffic and assisted the victims, and it advised drivers to drive cautiously.
BusinessDay reported severe traffic congestion around the scene. Drivers should plan extra time on routes near the bridge.
The reports on casualties conflict. The FRSC says two people were injured and none died in its initial report, while the headline of a BusinessDay report says two lives were lost.
The Rio Times could not confirm any deaths, and we are not reporting that anyone has died. Casualty figures may change as the agencies update their accounts.
What Is Not Known
The condition of the two injured men has not been made public, and neither have their identities. It is also unclear whether anyone died, given the conflicting reports.
Officials have not said whether other vehicles or property were damaged. It is also not known how long the expressway section was disrupted.
The driver’s own account has not been reported. The cause beyond the FRSC’s preliminary finding of speeding is not yet established.
What It Means for Travelers and US Readers
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is a main road out of Lagos, so a fire at Otedola Bridge can slow traffic well beyond the site. Americans and other visitors in Lagos should expect delays and follow local traffic officials.
Fuel tankers are a recurring road hazard in Nigeria. The Otedola Bridge area has seen earlier tanker explosions, including a gas truck explosion reported by Channels TV on 11 March 2025.
Hamzat’s appeal to keep away from burning tankers applies to visitors as much as residents. Travellers who see a fire should stay back and let emergency crews work.
For background on road risks, see our Nigeria Highway Safety Guide: Tanker Risks for Visitors, and for an earlier case, read Tanker Crash Kills 5 in Ibadan, Nigeria. More reporting is available in our Nigeria coverage section.
Agencies should clarify the casualty figures and the state of the road in the coming hours. Clearer figures should follow once the agencies publish further details.
