Pakistan star batter Babar Azam became only the fifth Pakistani to score 16,000 runs in international cricket during the opening ODI tri-series match against Sri Lanka at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
The 32-year-old reached the milestone after adding a few runs to his tally, joining an elite list of Pakistani batters that includes Inzamam-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, and Javed Miandad.
Babar Azam has now scored 16,038 international runs, including more than 6,671 in 144 ODIs, 4,771 in 66 Tests, and 4,596 in 145 T20Is. His international career also includes 32 centuries and 111 half-centuries.
Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq leads the country’s all-time run-scoring chart with 20,541 runs in 495 matches, followed by Younis Khan with 17,790 runs in 408 matches.
Most International Runs for Pakistan
| Player | Runs |
|---|---|
| Inzamam-ul-Haq | 20,541 |
| Younis Khan | 17,790 |
| Mohammad Yousuf | 17,134 |
| Javed Miandad | 16,213 |
| Babar Azam | 16,038 |
Meanwhile, Babar is also one century away from breaking Saeed Anwar’s record for the most ODI centuries by a Pakistani batter.
Both players currently have 20 ODI centuries, but Babar reached the mark in significantly fewer innings. Another hundred would take him past Anwar and give him the record outright.
He is also looking to become the third-fastest batter to reach 21 ODI centuries. South Africa’s Hashim Amla achieved the feat in 116 innings, while India’s Virat Kohli reached the milestone in 138 innings.
At the time of reporting, Pakistan were 62-2 after 12 overs, with Babar unbeaten on 27 off 34 balls, including four boundaries.
Debutant Saad Baig was batting on nine off 11 deliveries, having struck two boundaries.
Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka claimed both wickets, dismissing Saim Ayub for seven and Fakhar Zaman for 16.
