Why bonsai need extra care
Bonsai are miniature trees grown in shallow containers. Because these pots hold a limited volume of soil, they can dry out quickly during hot or windy weather.
Craig De Necker of landscape company The Friendly Plant says the coming summer could be particularly challenging for bonsai enthusiasts.
“Make sure to adjust your watering technique for sensitive plants, such as bonsai and orchids, which need a lot of care,” De Necker says.
Dry, brittle leaves may indicate that a plant is not receiving enough water. However, drooping foliage can also be a sign of over-watering, which can damage the roots.
Gardeners should check the soil regularly rather than relying on the appearance of the leaves alone. The soil should feel moist but not muddy.
Watering needs vary according to the species, pot size, weather conditions, and position of the plant.
Watering tips
For garden beds, De Necker recommends drip irrigation. Container-grown bonsai may require careful hand watering or a tested automated micro-irrigation system.
Watering during the cooler parts of the day can reduce evaporation. Gardeners should also ensure that excess water can drain freely from the container.
Avoid allowing bonsai pots to stand in water, as waterlogged soil can deprive roots of oxygen and encourage root damage.
Preparing bonsai for holidays
Holiday preparation is essential for anyone with a collection of bonsai or other container plants.
Place pots where they receive suitable light and protection from extreme afternoon heat. Plants positioned under eaves or against walls may receive little or no rain, so they should not be left dependent on rainfall alone.
Before leaving, water the plants thoroughly and arrange for someone to check them if the absence will last more than a day or two.
A suitable mulch, such as a thin layer of bark chips, may help reduce moisture loss. It should not block drainage or touch the trunk.
Automated irrigation can help, but systems should be tested before departure. A trusted plant sitter should also check for blocked emitters, leaks and signs of heat stress.
Bonsai show at Killarney Mall
The Houghton Bonsai, Succulent and Plant Show is scheduled to take place at Killarney Mall in Johannesburg from October 30 to November 1, 2026.
The Witwatersrand Orchid Society is also expected to take part, with live orchid-potting demonstrations scheduled daily at 11am and 2pm.
The show is set to feature more than 60 Bonsai exhibitors and enthusiasts.
