- At independence, our founding generation gave us heroes to remember. But independence was never supposed to be a permanent museum of old heroes. It was supposed to be the beginning of successive generations of heroes and heroism.
On my kicker tonight, sixty-two years after independence, Kenya must confront an uncomfortable question: Where are the heroes of our time?
Where are the men and women who will put country before self,
service before privilege, and the public good before personal gain?
Where are the patriots prepared to sacrifice something for
Kenya, instead of demanding that Kenya sacrifices everything for them?
At independence, our founding generation gave us heroes to
remember. But independence was never supposed to be a permanent museum of old
heroes. It was supposed to be the beginning of successive generations of heroes
and heroism.
And yet, more than six decades later, we seem to have become
better at celebrating our heroes of yesterday than producing the heroes of
today.
We have turned heroism into a political awards gala where we
pin medals on chests and confer titles, without asking a simple question: What
has this person actually done for the people and the country?
Is a hero someone who has mastered the art of political
survival? Someone who can mobilise crowds, command an impressive convoy? Or is
a hero someone who quietly changes lives, even when there are no cameras, no
applause and no political rewards?
Kenya needs a new definition of heroism.
We need public servants who see their offices as instruments
of service, not opportunities for enrichment.
We need leaders who can tell citizens the truth, even when the
truth is inconvenient. Leaders who understand that a public office is held in
trust, not owned as private property.
We need young Kenyans who refuse to believe that corruption is
the price of success, that tribal loyalty is the highest form of patriotism, or
that the only route to prosperity is proximity to political power.
And we need citizens who understand that heroism is not
reserved for State House, Parliament or the corridors of government.
Sometimes, a hero is a police officer who refuses a bribe.
Sometimes, a hero is a civil servant who rejects a fraudulent
payment.
Sometimes, a hero is a young person who refuses to be
recruited as a political goon.
Sometimes, it is a whistle-blower who exposes the theft of
public money.
And sometimes, the greatest act of courage is simply refusing
to participate in a national wrongdoing when everybody around you insists that
it is normal.
Kenya does not lack people with talent. It lacks enough spaces
in which integrity is rewarded, courage is protected and public service is
valued above personal connections.
Our challenge, therefore, is not merely to search for heroes.
It is to build a country in which heroism can thrive.
Our founding fathers and mothers were human beings, with their
own contradictions and shortcomings. We honour their sacrifices not by
pretending they were perfect, but by continuing the unfinished work of building
a just, prosperous and united nation.
The next generation must be judged by what it builds, what it
protects and what it refuses to tolerate. A generation of honest leaders.
Courageous citizens. Ethical professionals. Responsible entrepreneurs. Young
people who refuse to inherit our excuses along with our country.
A generation that understands that patriotism is not a slogan,
integrity is not a campaign promise, and public service is not a business
opportunity.
More than six decades after independence, Kenya must stop
asking only who our heroes were.
We must ask who are our next heroes?
This is my kicker.
