My dad built an LA radio empire — but his greatest legacy never came through a speaker

My dad, Michael Horn, passed away earlier this month. He was a pioneer in broadcasting, in LA and nationwide.

Long before the media industry embraced the idea that radio and audio could live across multiple platforms, Michael Horn was already imagining that future.

He didn’t see broadcasting as something confined to a frequency, a transmitter or a voice coming through a car speaker. He loved that, but he saw possibilities everywhere.

He believed radio was about people, personalities and human connections that could evolve and reach people in new ways others hadn’t yet imagined.

He pushed beyond the traditional boundaries of radio and pursued ideas that were ahead of their time. In 1983, that vision became CRN Digital Talk Radio, the business he created and led as CEO.

He was an early pioneer in expanding radio beyond the AM dial, bringing CRN to television and then expanding talk programming across multiple platforms long before it became the standard.

CRN was a pioneer in reaching audiences on cable, then streaming and eventually on digital apps.

But if I measure my dad’s life only by what he built, I miss the part of his story that mattered just as much.

My father was a visionary, an entrepreneur whose passion was inseparable from his identity and a man who simply refused to give up. If one idea didn’t work, he looked for another way. If someone told him something couldn’t be done, that only made him more determined to prove otherwise.

My dad lit up a room. He could make an impression in a way few people can and people remembered him long after they met him. He had energy, presence, ideas and an unmistakable enthusiasm for life. He could make people feel that something exciting was possible, that a new opportunity was just around the corner and that they might be part of making it happen.

His influence extended far beyond the company he built. He helped hundreds of people along the way, opening doors, creating opportunities and giving new life to people who had been cast away by what can be a brutal industry.

Business is often measured in numbers, revenue, ratings, market share and the bottom line. Those things matter when you are building a company.

My dad understood that, but he also understood something that can get lost in the pursuit of success. Not every important decision can be measured in dollars.

Sometimes my dad put friendships ahead of economic success. He valued the relationship over the transaction, the person over the immediate payoff.

It didn’t mean he lacked ambition. Quite the opposite. He was intensely ambitious. But his ambition existed alongside a genuine appreciation for people and the relationships he built with them.

As his daughter, I saw the man behind the business.

When your father builds a company, you come to understand that a business can be more than a place where people work. It can become an extension of his personality, his imagination, his determination and his belief in what is possible.

Now that my dad is gone, I find myself thinking about his legacy, about all our legacies and what we leave behind in the world. What is success? How do you define it?

It means seeing possibilities others cannot yet see. It means taking risks when the outcome isn’t guaranteed and continuing when the path becomes difficult. It means believing in an idea strongly enough to devote your life to making it real.

But perhaps it also means recognizing that innovation alone isn’t a legacy. A company can continue. Technology can change. Entire industries can reinvent themselves. The future my dad worked so hard to imagine will continue unfolding, with or without him.

What remains is the impact he had on the people who shared that journey. The colleagues he encouraged. The people he helped. The friendships he valued. The lives he touched simply by being himself. Those are pieces of his legacy that cannot be reduced.

I am proud of what my dad built. But I am also proud of the man who understood that success wasn’t always about getting the best deal.

My dad spent his life looking toward the future. In the end, however, I don’t think his life should be measured only by how far ahead he saw. It should also be measured by how many people he brought along with him.

His greatest legacy isn’t a radio network or a new way of broadcasting. It isn’t a business, a title or an idea ahead of its time. It is the people who love you. It is the lives you change. It is the memories that will stay with us long after the world has moved on.

And for me, it is the privilege of being Michael Horn’s daughter.

I love you, Dad. I will carry you with me in everything I do, in every challenge I face and in every dream I find the courage to pursue.

You spent your life looking toward the future.

I will spend the rest of mine carrying forward a part of you.
