SINGAPORE: Everyone would be shocked to receive parking tickets without owning a car, and this was exactly what happened to a woman whose husband said she received 19 parking tickets over the span of a year despite neither owning nor driving a vehicle.
Case details revealed that a 70-year-old man reported that his wife has been receiving tickets from the Housing Development Board since September last year, primarily due to illegal parking. With this, the man claimed that none of them owns a car, and neither do their two sons and daughters, which makes the case mysterious.
The tickets were issued for illegal parking without a valid parking coupon. The man said he had driven a car in 2024, but its licence plate did not match the one listed on the tickets. The vehicle’s certificate of entitlement (COE) was also valid for only six months and had long since expired.
“My wife has a driver's licence, but she has never driven a car before, and the first car she bought was more than 20 years ago,” the man stated.
The couple had already raised this concern to the police. It was stated in their report that the last time his wife received a ticket was on March 25 this year, and she also received red reminder notices and at least 17 yellow final reminder notices. In a span of a year, his wife received more than 50 notices overall.
Vehicle was not registered in her name
When they consulted the Land Transport Authority, they discovered that the vehicle in question was not registered under the wife’s name. The man claimed that his wife had been having difficulty sleeping because of this case, and that they don’t have enough money to pay the fines, which amounted to approximately $1,320. Furthermore, his wife was even summoned to court.
“During the process, a staff member informed us that if the car did not belong to his wife, we did not need to pay attention to the ticket. In addition, we also reported the matter to the councillor at least three times, and the councillor also consulted with the councillor on our behalf,” the man declared.
When asked, the wife admitted that some of the tickets have already been revoked, and there are currently nine tickets left to be processed. Moreover, as reported by Shin Min Daily News, the authorities informed her that she did not need to pay attention to the ticket and did not need to appear in court.
The authorities are still investigating the case.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out in a Woodlands bedroom, reportedly involving a power bank left on the bed. No one was injured, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
