Guwahati, Oct 14: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has found a new way to bowl over his political opponents — with a cricket bat in hand and Congress at the receiving end of his punchline.
Sarma took a swipe at the Congress in a social media post featuring a photograph of himself batting on a cricket pitch. His caption turned an ordinary cricketing moment into a political jibe, invoking the opposition’s allegations of electoral irregularities and demands for accountability.
“Good thing the bowler wasn’t from Congress. He’d have walked off claiming the ball was tampered with, the pitch was fixed and demanded the umpire’s resignation!” Sarma wrote.
The photograph shows the Chief Minister in the middle of a shot, with a tennis ball approaching and a group of spectators watching from behind the stumps. The timing gave Sarma the perfect setup for his joke: in his version of the game, even a cricket match could end up with allegations of tampering, a disputed pitch and an umpire being asked to step down.
The post is a dig at the Congress’s repeated allegations over the electoral process, including its “vote chori” campaign. Sarma has frequently criticised the opposition for questioning electoral institutions and EVMs over election results.
This time, he swapped the political podium for a cricket pitch, using the language of the game to deliver his message.
The joke’s punchline was simple: if the bowler had been from Congress, the match might have turned into a controversy before the next ball was bowled.
Whether the post scores a boundary or sparks another round of political sparring, Sarma has certainly managed to bring cricket and electoral politics onto the same pitch.
