My husband got a job after 4 months unemployed — Then came home pale

After four months of unemployment, my husband finally landed the job our family desperately needed. On his first day, he came home three hours early, locked every door, shut the blinds, and told me to pack the kids' bags immediately.

My name is Phoebe. My husband, Daniel, and I have been married for eleven years, and this summer nearly broke us.

In April, the company Daniel worked for shut down without warning.

One Friday, he had a job.

By Monday, he didn't.

At first, we told the kids everything was fine.

Our daughter, Lily, was nine. Our son, Max, was six. They were old enough to notice when things changed but young enough to believe us when we said those changes were temporary.

Then one month became two.

By July, we were fairly certain this would take longer than we'd anticipated.

We canceled our summer vacation.

We stopped ordering takeout.

I picked up extra shifts at the dental office where I worked, and Daniel spent hours every day applying for jobs.

Some weeks, he sent out twenty applications and heard nothing back.

Others, he got interviews that ended with the same polite email.

Every rejection made him quieter.

One night, I found him sitting alone in the kitchen at nearly midnight.

His laptop was open.

I touched his shoulder.

He rubbed both hands over his face.

"I applied for eleven jobs today."

"I know."

"Do you know how many I heard back from?"

I sat beside him.

"Daniel."

"You only need one."

He laughed without humor.

"That's easy to say when zero keeps showing up."

I wanted to tell him that losing the job hadn't made him less useful, less capable, or less of a father. But lately, every reassurance seemed to sound like pity to him.

Instead, I said, "We're still here."

He looked at me.

That scared me more than I admitted.

By August, our savings were almost gone.

The kids noticed more than we admitted, especially when Lily stopped asking about vacation and Max started saving coupons quietly.

Then, on a Tuesday morning, Daniel walked into the kitchen holding his phone.

His face looked strange.

For one awful second, I thought someone had died.

Then he said, "I got it."

I stared at him.

"What?"

I screamed.

Actually screamed.

Lily came running downstairs.

"Your dad got the job!"

Max appeared behind her.

"Does that mean pizza?"

Daniel laughed harder than I'd heard him laugh in months.

"Apparently, yes."

The salary was better than his old one.

The benefits were better too.

That night, we opened a cheap bottle of champagne and let the kids order whatever pizza they wanted.

Lily chose something with enough toppings to qualify as a salad.

Max ordered plain cheese.

Daniel raised his plastic cup.

I clinked mine against his.

"To never hearing the phrase 'we went with another candidate' again."

He smiled.

Daniel checked the offer email three times that night, as if the words might disappear or the verdict might change.

For the first time all summer, I felt like I could breathe.

Daniel's new company was a civil-engineering contractor that worked with the county.

Roads, drainage systems, underground utilities.

It wasn't glamorous, but Daniel didn't care.

"It's stable," he kept saying.

He started the following Monday.

On his first morning, he came downstairs wearing a new shirt and the expensive shoes we'd bought before everything fell apart.

I took out my phone.

He groaned.

"Stand still."

"I'm going to work, not kindergarten. No pictures."

He smiled while I took the picture, despite himself.

Before he left, I kissed him.

"Tonight, we're celebrating properly."

"Didn't we already celebrate?"

"Pizza doesn't count."

"I bought steaks."

His eyes widened.

"You bought steaks?"

"Don't make me regret it."

He kissed me again.

"Six o'clock."

That afternoon, I took the steaks out of the refrigerator and started dinner early.

After months of saying no to almost everything, I wanted one evening where we didn't have to think about money.

By three, the kitchen smelled like garlic and butter, and I had started setting out the plates we rarely used.

At 3:47, I heard the front door open.

I checked the clock.

Then I heard Daniel's footsteps.

Fast.

He came into the kitchen still wearing his work clothes.

The smile he'd left with that morning was gone.

His face was pale.

He didn't answer.

He turned around and locked the front door.

Then he went to the nearest window and pulled the blinds shut.

He moved to the living room and closed those blinds too.

My stomach tightened.

"You're scaring me."

He looked toward the stairs.

"Where are the kids?"

"Get them."

I stared at him.

"Why?"

"Did something happen at work?"

He grabbed my hands.

His were shaking.

In eleven years, I had seen Daniel angry, sick, exhausted, drunk, grieving, and terrified when Max needed emergency surgery for appendicitis.

I had never seen him like this.

"Pack a bag," he said.

"What?"

"For you and the kids. Essentials only."

"Please."

His eyes flicked toward the front window.

"We need to leave."

"Are you in trouble?"

"Did someone threaten you?"

"No."

"Then tell me what's happening."

He took out his phone.

For a second, he just held it.

Then he unlocked the screen.

"Okay."

"They assigned me to a county drainage project. A field crew found something after last week's storms."

"What kind of something?"

He swiped through several pictures.

I waited.

He found the image he wanted and handed me the phone.

It was a photograph of a projected map.

Lines crossed beneath several streets.

One section had been highlighted in red.

I recognized the neighborhood.

Then I recognized our street.

Our house number was circled.

I looked up.

Daniel swallowed.

"There's an old stormwater tunnel under part of the neighborhood."

"Since when?"

"Decades."

"Why didn't we know?"

I frowned.

"Daniel, I don't understand."

"The tunnel partially collapsed."

I looked at the map again.

"Under our house?"

"Near it. Maybe partly under the property. They're still mapping the exact failure."

My mouth went dry.

"Part of the soil above it may not be properly supported anymore."

I stared at him.

"Bad enough that they're worried."

"About what?"

He stared at me.

"The ground giving way."

I laughed once because the sentence sounded impossible.

Then I saw his face.

"Yes."

"Why hasn't anyone told us?"

"The county's emergency team is working on it now. They were still confirming the affected area when my supervisor saw our address on my paperwork."

"He asked if I had family at home. I said yes."

"What did he say?"

That was when I finally understood the urgency.

I looked toward the ceiling.

Our children were upstairs.

Suddenly, every ordinary sound in the house felt wrong.

A pipe ticking.

The refrigerator humming.

Max running down the hall.

I called upstairs.

"Kids! Shoes on. Now."

Lily appeared at the railing.

"Just do it."

Daniel grabbed bags.

I packed clothes, medication, chargers, toothbrushes, and the folder containing our insurance papers.

Max came downstairs holding three stuffed animals.

"One," I said.

"Fine. Three."

We were almost out the door when I looked through the blinds.

Martha's house.

She lived next door.

Eighty-two years old.

Widowed.

Didn't drive.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

"Phoebe."

"She's alone."

"The county's warning people."

Daniel looked at the house.

Then at me.

"Fast."

I ran outside.

Daniel followed me.

I pounded on Martha's door.

She answered wearing slippers.

"Pack a bag."

She blinked.

"Something's wrong underground. We need to leave."

Behind me, Daniel called, "Phoebe, hurry!"

Martha looked at him.

"Is this about construction?"

"No," I said. "There's a damaged drainage tunnel."

Her expression changed.

"Possibly."

I helped her pack medication while Daniel loaded her walker.

Then I looked across the street.

Daniel stared at me.

"We cannot knock on fifty doors."

"Then we knock on the closest ones."

So we did.

We didn't try to empty the neighborhood ourselves. We warned the houses beside us and the ones directly across the street while we headed toward the car.

Some neighbors listened immediately.

A woman two houses down grabbed her toddler and left without arguing.

Another man asked Daniel for proof.

Daniel showed him the picture.

He went pale.

Then we reached Mr. George.

He laughed.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"I'm telling you engineers found major soil movement."

"And the county hasn't said anything?"

"They're about to."

"So right now, it's rumor."

Mr. George folded his arms.

"I'll wait for something official."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Don't tell me what to do in my own house."

I grabbed Daniel's sleeve.

"Enough."

He looked furious.

"We warned him."

We left.

Twenty minutes later, we reached my sister Rachel's house.

Our daughter kept asking whether the house would still be there tomorrow, and I kept reassuring her.

Less than an hour after that, phones across our neighborhood started buzzing.

Emergency alert.

Temporary evacuation.

Possible ground instability.

Do not remain inside affected properties.

Daniel stared at the notification.

I thought he'd feel relieved.

Instead, he walked outside.

I found him sitting alone on Rachel's back steps.

I sat beside him.

He stared ahead.

"I might have messed up the job."

"What?"

"I left in the middle of my first day."

"He told me to get my family out. I don't think he meant disappear for the rest of the day."

"Daniel, half our neighborhood just got evacuated."

"I know."

He rubbed his hands together.

"But when you're the new guy, you don't know what's going to count against you."

I turned toward him.

"Daniel."

"I waited four months for somebody to give me a chance. Four months, Phoebe. Then on day one, I'm gone before lunch is even over."

He shook his head.

"Supporting this family was the one thing I was supposed to do."

I took his hand.

"You did."

"Not if I lose the paycheck."

He finally looked at me.

"All summer, you thought supporting us meant bringing home money."

I squeezed his hand.

He looked away quickly.

Daniel barely slept that night, checking his phone whenever it lit up and pretending each notification meant nothing to him.

The next morning, his phone rang at 7:12.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"It's my supervisor."

For four months, every important phone call had seemed to end with someone telling Daniel no.

"Answer it."

He did.

"Hello?"

I watched his face.

"Yes, sir."

Pause.

Another pause.

Daniel frowned.

"You want me where?"

He listened.

Then looked at me.

When he hung up, I waited.

"Well?"

He smiled.

I laughed.

"What did he say?"

"He said I did exactly what he told me to do."

Daniel looked at the phone again.

"He wants me at the emergency office. They need help updating the property maps."

"Absolutely."

We stayed away for five days.

Part of our street needed major repairs.

Several yards were dug up.

One driveway cracked.

Our house was eventually cleared for occupancy.

Three weeks later, I finally cooked us steaks.

We ate outside on folding chairs because half the street still looked like a construction zone.

Daniel came straight from work.

His expensive first-day shoes were ruined.

His shirt was dusty.

Max looked at his plate.

Daniel picked up his fork.

"Don't care. I'm finally eating it."

I took out my phone.

He groaned.

"First month is first month."

He laughed.

I took the picture.

Behind him, the street was still damaged.

His good shoes were ruined. His shirt was dusty.

He smiled anyway.
