By The Numbers: Iowa vs. Minnesota

It’s been two weeks since Iowa went to Seattle and put down a Washington Huskies team that looked lost for 3 quarters. That game took place just less than 2 weeks after Washington was fairly well dominated (though not so much on the scoreboard) by the Golden Gophers who await them Saturday in Minneapolis.

Now, to be fair, Washington surrendered a lot more yardage (especially on the ground) to the Hawks than they did to the Gophers, but Minnesota’s defense put the Huskies into a very similar cage (sorry for all the dog puns, they’re just too easy), allowing just 279 total yards (239 passing, 40 rushing) while intercepting Demond Williams twice. Iowa actually allowed more total yards to the Huskies (317 – 320 passing, -3 rushing) – though a good chunk of that (84 yards) came on the Huskies’ last drive after Iowa’s starters had taken a seat.

The difference, really, between Iowa’s win over the Huskies and Minnesota’s win was that Iowa’s offense put on one helluva show. 41 points on 465 total yards (202 passing – 10.6/play, 263 rushing – 6.9/play) was likely not on anyone’s bingo card in a game Iowa entered as a 3.5-point road dog on a West Coast Friday night. Hell, even here at the Pants we, collectively, only had the Hawks putting up 25 points. Minnesota getting taken to the woodshed by OMHR the following day just made the win on the West Coast that much sweeter.

So what do we have to look forward to this Saturday in Minneapolis? Well, probably cooler weather, maybe some rain as well, and ideally a return trip to Iowa City for the most beautiful bronze pig anyone has ever laid eyes on.

Let’s see what the numbers have to say.

The Teams

• Iowa: 5-1 overall, 2-1 conference (No. 15 AP / No. 14 Coaches)
• Minnesota: 4-2 overall, 2-1 conference

Series History

• All-time record: Minnesota leads 63-54-2 since 1891 — Saturday is the 120th all-time meeting and the 92nd played for Floyd of Rosedale, where Iowa leads 46-43-2
• Most recent meeting: Iowa won 41-3 on Oct. 25, 2025, at Kinnick
• Current streak: Iowa has won 2 straight (2024, 2025), 10 of the last 11 and 20 of the last 25. Minnesota’s lone win in that 11-game span was 12-10 in Iowa City in 2023.
• Of note:
  • Iowa has won five straight in Minneapolis (since 2016)
  • Minnesota’s last home win in the series was 51-14 in 2014
  • Saturday is Minnesota’s Homecoming — the Gophers are 10-4 against Iowa in Homecoming games but haven’t won one since 1974.
  • A Minnesota win would give it Floyd, the Little Brown Jug and Paul Bunyan’s Axe at the same time for the first time since 1978.
  • Iowa currently holds all four of its traveling trophies and is 33-11 in its last 44 rivalry trophy games.

Coaching Staff

• Iowa: Kirk Ferentz (28th season; 214-129 at Iowa; 20-7 vs. Minnesota as Iowa’s head coach) / Tim Lester, OC (3rd season) / Phil Parker, DC (15th season) / Chris Polizzi, ST Coordinator (1st season)
• Minnesota: P.J. Fleck, HC (10th season; 70-46 at Minnesota, 100-68 career; 1-8 vs. Iowa at Minnesota) / Greg Harbaugh Jr., OC (4th season) / Danny Collins, DC (2nd season), with Nick Monroe as co-DC / Daniel Da Prato, ST Coordinator (1st season, from New Mexico). Saturday is the 11th Ferentz–Fleck meeting — the most Fleck has faced any coach. Harbaugh coached WRs at Western Michigan (2020-21) under Lester, who succeeded Fleck there.

Offense

Jeremy Hecklinski is your starting QB, at least for one more week. It’s not all that surprising given that Hank wasn’t 100% going into the game against Washington (medically cleared or not), so it would make sense that Heck would get the majority of snaps with the 1’s last week during the by, and most likely the majority of snaps starting last Sunday. Yes, Kirk has confirmed that Hank is 100%, but he hasn’t been at full strength since about halfway through the 4th quarter of the OSU game, so why wouldn’t they stick with the hot hand.

Regardless of who is taking the snaps, Kamari Moulton is definitely at 100% and will be hungry for another 100+ yard game as he pushes closer and closer to his first 1000-yard rushing season, and he’ll be going up against a Minnesota Oline that allowed Purdue to rush for more than 300 yards two weeks ago. Oh, not to mention that LJ Phillips is fully back from tweaking his ankle against the Huskies, and Braden Jackson is still super duper fast.

Minnesota has weapons to be sure – Javon Tracy, Noah Jennings, and Jalen Smith are all averaging more than 11.5 yards per catch, and TJ Thomas (if he’s healthy) is averaging 6.2 yards per carry. They also have an experienced QB in Drake Lindsay, though his 5 INTs this season (to 9 TDs) may belie that experience.

This one probably won’t be easy, but I’ll be honest, I like the way this team is playing right now, especially with Heck under center. He brings an edge that Hank just doesn’t seem to have, and I think they are hitting their stride at exactly the right time.

ADVANTAGE: Iowa — ~62 more yards per game, driven by a run game that’s 35th nationally (6.1 per carry, 3rd in FBS) against Minnesota’s 129th (3.66 per carry). Minnesota throws for 27 more yards a game, and both lines protect well: Iowa has allowed 5 sacks (10th in FBS), Minnesota 4 (9th).

Defense

Let’s recap the Iowa’s defenses performance in the first half last week: Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, Punt, FG, end of half. Washington’s total yards at halftime? 109. First downs? 7. Points? 3. That’s one helluva half from a unit that was reeling a little bit after getting beat up by OSU. They did struggle a little out of the half, but to hold a P4 opponent to negative rushing yards is nothing to sniff at.

Yeah, there were some issues in the secondary when UW decided to bring in a QB that actually wanted to play in the game, and some penalties that cost them some yards, but on balance, there wasn’t a whole lot to be unhappy about with the defense’s performance against the Huskies.

Minnesota’s defense, on the other hand, had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day two Saturdays ago in West Lafayette. It should be said that prior to that shellacking, they had put up some pretty solid numbers across their first 5 weeks. They’re 18th in scoring defense, top 10 against the pass, and averaging more than 7 TFLs per game. They may not be elite, but they are still pretty good. But again, they gave up 41 to Purdue two weeks ago, so I guess it’s all going to come down to which version of the Minnesota defense shows up.

ADVANTAGE: Iowa — 8th nationally in scoring defense, 7th against the run (2.5 per carry, one rushing TD allowed all season) and 6th in sacks (3.17 per game). Minnesota’s defense is better than its scoring average suggests, but it’s 104th in red-zone defense (88.9% scoring rate).

Special Teams

Iowa’s special teams have been quite impressive in 2026, and it’s even more impressive given what they had to replace after 2025. Boston Everitt is a huge part of that equation (and arguably an upgrade over Rhys Dakin). We haven’t replaced Kaden Wetjen (though no one seems to want to do anything to allow kick or punt returns this season), but Evan James and RVZ have done a more than serviceable job handling punts, and Braden is always a threat to put up a good kickoff return (provided he can field one). All in all, it’s reassuring that what looked like it could be a weakness going into the season has proved to be an immutable strength for the Hawks.

Minnesota ain’t too shabby in this arena either. They’ve got their own return weapon in Javon Tracy, a very good kicker in Luke Drzewiecki (10/10 FGs, long of 51 – currently riding a streak of 21 consecutive FGs made), and a pretty solid punter in Tom Weston (41.5 yards per punt).

ADVANTAGE: Push — Iowa leads the nation in kickoff-return average, Minnesota counters with the nation’s most dangerous punt returner, and both teams are solid in the kicking game.

Position Battles

• QB (Iowa) — The Week 8 depth chart lists Hank Brown OR Jeremy Hecklinski, but Ferentz said Tuesday that Hecklinski will start, calling the decision “awfully close.”
• RB (Minnesota) — usage question, not a confirmed “OR”: Darius Taylor (No. 1) has 64 carries for 154 yards (2.4 ypc) and 4 TD, plus 18 catches for 155 yards; he hasn’t looked the same since a Week 2 injury, but Fleck says he’s a full practice participant and still backs him. TJ Thomas (No. 23), the Elon transfer, leads the team with 317 yards on 51 carries (6.2 ypc) and 1 TD. Recheck the Gophers’ depth chart before publishing.

Numbers to Watch

• 10 – Jeremy Hecklinski, Iowa QB – Gets the start (see Position Battles). Completed his final 12 passes at Washington and earned Manning Award Star of the Week honors; has led Iowa to 49 points over its last five quarters.
• 28 – Kamari Moulton, Iowa RB – Leads the Big Ten in rushing at 103.8 yards per game (15th nationally): 76 carries, 519 yards (6.8 ypc), 4 TD. Career-high 208 yards and 2 TD at Washington — the most by a Hawkeye in a road game since Marcus Coker’s 252 at Minnesota in 2011.
• 5 – Drake Lindsey, Minnesota QB – 127-of-196 (64.8%) for 1,335 yards, 9 TD and 5 INT; 21.2 completions per game rank 3rd in the Big Ten. Threw for 248 yards at Purdue. In his only start against Iowa last year: 16-of-28 for 109 yards, 0 TD and 3 INT.
• 11 – Javon Tracy, Minnesota WR/PR – Leads the Gophers with 32 catches for 375 yards (1 TD), and leads the Big Ten (6th nationally) at 17.6 yards per punt return, with 2 TDs, both in the opener. Miami (Ohio) transfer is 5 yards shy of 2,000 career receiving yards.
• 0 – Anthony Smith, Minnesota DL – Preseason All-American has 13 tackles, 3.0 TFL and 1.5 sacks while drawing extra attention; 21.0 career sacks rank 5th among active FBS players. Anchors a blitz-heavy front facing an Iowa line with three new starters.

Lines

As of: Oct. 21, 2026

• Point spread: Iowa -6.5
• Over/Under: 40.5
• Moneyline: Iowa -245 / Minnesota +198

I don’t know why, but I’ve got a good feeling about this one. If I were a betting man (which I am not) I think I’d be taking the over and Iowa to cover.

As always, GO HAWKS!!!
