PETALING JAYA: The prisons department is looking into allegations of water shortages and poor hygiene at Kajang prison, and has pledged to take immediate action if any shortcomings are found.
The department said it was reviewing claims by Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) concerning disruptions to water supply, sanitation facilities and food preparation at the prison.
"We are examining the allegations to establish the actual situation and ensure that the matters raised receive due attention," it said in a statement.
"Immediate improvements will be given priority to address any shortcomings identified, especially involving basic facilities, cleanliness and the welfare of inmates."
LFL alleged earlier today that Kajang prison, which houses 5,000 inmates, was facing severe water shortages that made it difficult for inmates to bathe and use the toilets.
The group claimed water flowed so slowly that inmates took hours to fill a pail, while some were unable to use the toilets for up to two days.
It also alleged that each room received only one litre of drinking water daily and raised concerns over dirty food trays and poor food hygiene.
LFL called on the government and prison authorities to immediately address the problems and ensure that inmates have adequate access to clean water and proper sanitation.
The prisons department said it placed great importance on the welfare, health, hygiene and safety of inmates, including the provision of basic necessities in accordance with regulations and procedures.
The department advised the public to refer to its official channels for accurate and verified information. It also urged the public not to speculate or spread unverified information about the allegations.
