Police say suspects threatened waste collection workers, sought control of fee collection
Three people have been arrested for allegedly demanding Tk 50 lakh a month from Gulshan Society over waste collection operations in Dhaka's Gulshan residential area.
The arrestees are Anwar, 30, Nazmul, 25, and Zidan Mia, 19, according to a Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) press release issued on Sunday evening.
Police said the three, claiming to represent the Mahabub and Robin groups, had allegedly been threatening workers appointed by Gulshan Society to collect household waste in the area.
They also distributed leaflets of an organisation called Ruby Enterprise, demanding that residents pay waste collection fees to the company instead, police said.
According to police, a group of armed men entered the Gulshan Society office around 3:30pm on October 6, verbally abused those present, threatened to kill them and demanded Tk 50 lakh per month.
Following the incident, Gulshan police launched an investigation and identified the suspects by analysing CCTV footage from the office and surrounding areas, as well as using information technology, the press release said.
The three were arrested around 7:00pm on Saturday near Ashiyan Medical College Hospital in Khilkhet.
A case has been filed with Gulshan Police Station in connection with the incident, and legal proceedings are underway, police said.
