The most anticipated Big Ten football matchup of the season takes place this week, as No. 4 Ohio State and No. 5 Indiana will meet in a rematch of last year's Big Ten Championship Game. The Buckeyes will look to avenge their loss to the Hoosiers in last year's meeting, but this time they will have to do so on the road at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington. Despite the head-to-head loss last season and the challenge of playing in enemy territory, Ohio State heads into this top-five showdown as a very mild favorite according to Vegas.
With these teams boasting two of the top offensive units in the country, the ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities could prove to be the difference. Whether it be Ohio State's offensive playmakers, dominant defense, or extra motivation, the Buckeyes have several reasons why they will leave Bloomington with a win.
Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith is a matchup nightmare
You could make the case for Ohio State to win any game on its schedule, and the biggest reason would remain the same: Jeremiah Smith. Smith's ability to dominate one-on-one coverage and make contested catches is unmatched. His unique set of abilities makes him a player that no team has been able to contain this season.
The Buckeyes' leading pass-catcher doesn't only have a menacing physical presence; he also has the ability to turn any play call into a score. Last week against Maryland, we witnessed Smith turn two receptions on underneath routes into touchdowns by flexing his speed and agility in just the first half. The Heisman favorite will always be a game changer in the scarlet and gray.
The Ohio State passing game could exploit Indiana's defense
With Jeremiah Smith leading the receiving corps and Julian Sayin delivering the ball, Ohio State will be able to stretch the field with their passing attack. Smith will obviously be a big part of the offense, but this matchup goes beyond one player. If the future first-round pick takes the defense's attention, the Buckeyes have no shortage of receiver talent that could shine, including veterans Devin McCuin and Brandon Inniss, as well as highly touted freshman Chris Henry Jr.
Indiana will also allow big opportunities due to their defensive situation. After the Hoosiers' undefeated season last year, they lost a lot of personnel to the NFL Draft. Including Indiana's former star cornerback and second-round draft pick, D'Angelo Ponds. Due to the personnel changes, questions have been asked surrounding Curt Cignetti's defense. This week will tell a lot, as the Hoosiers will be tested more than they have all season. Here's what Joel Klatt had to say about it, courtesy of the Joel Klatt Show's Instagram page:
The Ohio State defense can make Indiana uncomfortable
Ohio State's offense gets a lot of attention; however, the Buckeyes' defensive talent is immense. This is especially true in their secondary, which has posted the lowest allowed completion percentage (53.2%) and passer rating (92.4) in the country through its first six games. The defensive back group will have a test against Josh Hoover, one of the nation's best quarterbacks, but Jaylen McClain and company have the ability to ace it.
The Buckeyes' secondary and defensive line could complement each other well, causing problems for the Hoosiers' passing attack. The pressure that Ohio State has forced hasn't quite gotten there yet this year, with only nine sacks to date; however, if the back end gives Josh Hoover nowhere to throw, that will give the D-line more time to hit home. In turn, if the defensive front can produce pressure that keeps Hoover on his toes, that will force him to take negative plays or test a very strong group of corners and safeties. All roads point to an uncomfortable day for the Indiana offense.
Ohio State has experience winning in tough environments
Playing in Bloomington this Saturday won't be easy by any means. Especially in front of a crowd that will see a Top-10 matchup take place on their home field for the first time. Despite the difficulties, Ohio State has shown that it can perform far from the friendly confines of Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes were in Iowa City just a few weeks ago for a ranked game against the then No. 14-ranked Hawkeyes, who also had a passionate crowd. A game where we saw Ryan Day's squad win 31-14 while putting up 324 passing yards.
Indiana isn't the only Memorial Stadium that Ohio State has played in either, as the Buckeyes traveled to Austin in week two for the most anticipated game of the season versus the Texas Longhorns. This game resulted in the Buckeyes' sole loss of the current season, but it showed that they can compete under high pressure and in unfamiliar places. As long as Ohio State starts fast and converts in crucial moments, the crowd shouldn't be able to affect the game.
Ohio State has extra motivation against the Hoosiers
We last saw the Buckeyes and Hoosiers meet in the 2025 Big Ten Championship game. A tight finish and a missed field goal helped Indiana secure the win, 13-10, and its first outright Big Ten Championship in football since 1945. This result left a bad taste in the mouths of Ohio State players, coaches, and fans.
On Saturday, nearly a year later, the Buckeyes have a chance to answer for that loss by taking down Indiana in its home stadium. In December, a championship slipped right through their fingers, and a new season presents them with a perfect opportunity to remind the nation that Ohio State is college football's premier program. With last year's loss providing an extra layer of motivation, there will be plenty to prove for the Buckeyes when they take the field in Bloomington.
