A modest painting purchased for just a few dozen dollars turned out to be a potentially life-changing discovery after spending years forgotten in a cupboard. The artwork, attributed to renowned British landscape painter John Constable, came back into the spotlight during a home renovation, eventually drawing attention from art experts and collectors.
The discovery was among several remarkable finds reported by Artnet News in its 2024 roundup of unexpected treasures, alongside accounts covered by the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow and Fake or Fortune. From overlooked paintings to rare collectibles, these discoveries demonstrated how objects dismissed as ordinary possessions can sometimes conceal extraordinary artistic and financial value.
A forgotten painting finds its way back into the spotlight
The small painting belonged to Robert Darvell, who had acquired it at an auction years earlier for approximately $37.
Rather than becoming a prized possession, it remained tucked away in a cupboard until renovation work brought it back to attention. Its rediscovery prompted a closer examination of the artwork’s origins. The painting was subsequently authenticated as a work by John Constable, one of Britain’s most celebrated landscape artists, known for his depictions of the English countryside. The attribution transformed the story of an inexpensive auction purchase into a significant art discovery.
The painting was estimated to be worth around $315,000, a striking increase from its original price. The case also highlighted the importance of provenance and expert examination in the art market. A painting’s appearance or modest purchase price alone cannot establish its authenticity; specialists must assess its characteristics and supporting evidence before reaching a conclusion.
Why a matters
John Constable, who lived from 1776 to 1837, helped reshape British landscape painting through his detailed observations of nature, changing weather and rural life.
His work influenced generations of artists and remains highly sought after by collectors. Constable’s paintings are particularly associated with the English countryside, including the landscapes of Suffolk that inspired some of his best-known works.
His reputation, combined with the rarity and historical significance of authenticated paintings, helps explain why an overlooked work attributed to him could command such a substantial valuation.
For collectors, discoveries like Darvell’s are exciting not simply because of their potential financial returns, but because they can bring previously overlooked works back into public view.
When ordinary purchases become extraordinary discoveries
The Constable painting was not the only unexpected treasure to attract attention in 2024. Other discoveries that year illustrated how valuable objects can remain hidden in plain sight. A rare 14-karat gold Lego Bionicle Hau mask, found in a donated jewellery box at Goodwill, sold for more than $18,000.
Meanwhile, a Victorian brooch purchased for around $25 at an antiques market was identified as a rare design by architect and designer William Burges and later sold for approximately $15,000.Another painting, bought for a modest sum at a thrift shop, was identified as a work by Frans David Oerder, a Dutch-born artist associated with South African art. The pastoral scene featured on Antiques Roadshow and was estimated to have the potential to fetch as much as $120,000.
Elsewhere, a painting hanging in an Italian family’s home was attributed to Pablo Picasso, while a work by Canadian artist Emily Carr, acquired at a Hamptons barn sale for $50, eventually sold for $290,000.
A painting by Canadian Impressionist Helen McNicoll, meanwhile, was authenticated after being purchased decades earlier and was valued at approximately $390,000.Together, these stories offered a reminder that valuable art and collectibles do not always arrive through prestigious galleries or high-end auction houses. Sometimes, they emerge from charity shops, estate sales, family cupboards and everyday purchases whose significance becomes apparent only years later. For Darvell, the painting’s rediscovery turned an inexpensive auction buy into an extraordinary find.
Its journey also showed why a closer look at an overlooked object can occasionally reveal a piece of art history hiding in an unexpected place.
