The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Sunday, October 11, organised a candlelight march in Guwahati demanding justice for Himashree Boro, who was found dead near railway tracks in Andhra Pradesh.
The students’ body also demanded accountability from the authorities and stronger security measures for women and people from the Northeast travelling outside the region.
Addressing the gathering, AASU chief adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharjya alleged negligence on the part of the authorities and called for strict action against those responsible for Boro’s death.
“It's due to the negligence of the authorities. The culprit must be punished, and they must be held accountable,” he said.
Bhattacharjya said the march was aimed at seeking justice for Boro and drawing attention to the safety concerns faced by people from the Northeast in other parts of the country.
“People of the Northeast, we are not secure in other parts of the country. Why? We are also part of the country,” he said.
He urged the Centre and the concerned state governments to take effective steps to ensure the safety of people from the region while travelling outside the Northeast.
“It’s the duty of the central government and the concerned government to give full security. They must adopt effective measures for that,” he added.
