In a post on his X handle on Monday, Atiku was reacting to a disturbing video of Ahmed Zakka, who was reportedly abducted alongside his wife and infant child.
Atiku described the incident as a painful reminder of the insecurity affecting families across the country, saying no Nigerian should have to plead for his life or the safety of his family.
He said the involvement of an infant in the abduction was especially heartbreaking.
Atiku urged security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to secure the safe release of Ahmed Zakka, his wife, their child and other Nigerians in captivity.
He said the incident came at a time when many families were already facing economic hardship due to rising costs of food, transport and other essentials, noting that insecurity further deepened hardship and disrupted livelihoods.
The former vice president called on the government to ensure the rescue of those in captivity, protect vulnerable communities and dismantle the criminal networks responsible for kidnapping.
He expressed sympathy with the Zakka family and other families affected by kidnapping, adding that the protection of lives should remain a key responsibility of government.
