The police in Cross River State have arrested a 26-year-old man, Emmanuel Adoga, over alleged rape and armed robbery in Ogoja Local Government Area of the state.
The command said the arrest followed a petition submitted on October 9 by the father of a 22-year-old woman, alleging that the suspect threatened her with a dangerous object, sexually assaulted her and forcibly took her Infinix Smart 7 mobile phone.
The suspect was also accused of demanding an additional N15,000 from the woman.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said Adoga had been arrested and the stolen phone recovered.
He added that investigators had visited the scene and obtained photographic and electronic evidence.
Akata said investigations were ongoing into allegations that the suspect used a hammer, allegedly presented as a firearm, to threaten the woman.
He said the survivor had undergone a medical examination and was receiving treatment, adding that the case would be processed for further legal action after the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, said the command remained committed to investigating sexual violence and other serious crimes in accordance with due process.
