- Former All Blacks winger Jeff Wilson pointed to Australia's victory over a heavily rotated Springbok side as the source of their misjudgement
- The Wallabies suffered a 50-19 defeat to New Zealand at Eden Park, where the All Blacks extended their unbeaten home record to 53 Tests
- Wilson argued that New Zealand's recent series against a full-strength South Africa gave the All Blacks a crucial physical benchmark Australia lacked
Former All Blacks winger Jeff Wilson has argued that Australia's victory over South Africa three weeks ago gave the Wallabies a false sense of readiness, leaving them exposed when they faced the All Blacks at Eden Park on Saturday.
Speaking on Sky Sport's The Breakdown, Wilson said the result in Perth, where Australia edged South Africa 42-38, carried little weight as a measure of Wallaby preparedness. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus had made 13 changes to his starting XV for that fixture following the conclusion of the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series, meaning Australia had not encountered South Africa at anything close to full strength.
**All Blacks Hardened by Springbok Series**
Wilson explained that New Zealand had drawn tangible benefit from their recent Test series against a full-strength Springbok outfit, despite losing three consecutive matches to South Africa before the Bledisloe Cup opener. He said those encounters gave the All Blacks a clear understanding of the physical demands required at the elite level, which translated directly into their commanding performance against the Wallabies.
The former international noted that New Zealand's ability to sustain that intensity throughout the full 80 minutes revealed how ill-equipped Australia was to match a side that had recently been tested to its limits by the world's top-ranked team.
Saturday's 50-19 victory at Eden Park extended New Zealand's unbeaten run at the iconic Auckland venue to 53 Tests, reinforcing how formidable a challenge it is for any visiting side.
**Wilson Calls for All Blacks to Build on Win**
Despite praising New Zealand's display, Wilson urged the team not to be satisfied. He stressed that the All Blacks must reproduce that level of performance and continue raising their standards as the international season progresses.
New Zealand now prepares to face Australia again in Sydney, where they will look to follow up their opening Bledisloe Cup victory. Wilson believes the South Africa series has given New Zealand a valuable benchmark that should serve the team well in the weeks ahead.
For Australia, the magnitude of the defeat underlined that a win over a heavily rotated Springbok side is not an adequate measure of how prepared a team is to face the All Blacks operating at their peak.
