Senior Indian and Russian security officials held a new round of consultations on Afghanistan and Pakistan in New Delhi, with the two countries discussing regional developments and their implications for international security.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said Wednesday’s meeting was the seventh round of the India-Russia Special Mechanism on Pakistan and Afghanistan, a bilateral channel through which New Delhi and Moscow coordinate their assessments of developments in the two neighboring countries.
The talks were co-chaired by Indian Deputy National Security Adviser Pavan Kapoor and Aleksandr Venediktov, deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council.
The ministry said the two sides held “wide-ranging discussions” on issues of common interest and their impact on international security. It did not disclose specific issues raised regarding Afghanistan or Pakistan or announce any agreements resulting from the talks.
India and Russia also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation under what the two governments describe as their Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.
Venediktov separately met Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval during his visit to New Delhi, according to the ministry.
The talks represent the latest in a series of consultations between India and Russia on Afghanistan and regional security.
Kapoor and Venediktov also met in Bishkek in May on the sidelines of a meeting of security council secretaries from Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states.
