The National Police are investigating a fire that affected motorhomes and caravans in the Son Hugo car park in Palma on Wednesday that is suspected to have been deliberate.
The fire started around 12.45pm. There were several loud bangs. One of the vehicles was initially affected. The fire then spread to three others. A major emergency response followed involving Palma and National Police, Palma Fire and Rescue and the 061 emergency health service. A team of environment agents was also deployed in case the fire spread unexpectedly.
The car park is 'home' to between 150 and 200 people - the number tends to fluctuate. It is one of the sites established by people faced with little alternative than to live in motorhomes because of the housing crisis. A mother and her two daughters live in one of the worst-affected vehicles. The woman wasn't there at the time. Most of the people in Son Hugo have jobs. There were no reports of injury.
Three of the vehicles were completely burned out, a fourth was partially affected. Social services have been arranging shelter accommodation.
Witnesses say they saw a group of individuals unconnected to the community living in Son Hugo fleeing the scene just seconds before the fire started.
