Social Security Payments Up to $5,181 Coming This Week—Who Gets Paid?

Millions of Americans are due to receive their latest Social Security payments this week, with another round of October benefits scheduled to arrive on Wednesday, October 21, according to the official Social Security Administration (SSA) payment calendar.

Payments can reach $5,181 a month for some retirees, although the amount a person receives depends on their earnings history and when they started claiming benefits.

Who’s Getting Paid This Week?

For beneficiaries who began receiving Social Security payments after April 1997 and don’t get any Supplemental Security Income (SSI), payment dates are generally determined by their birthday.

The SSA's schedule says beneficiaries born from between the 1st and the 10th of a month receive their payments on the second Wednesday of the month. Those born between the 11th and the 20th will be paid on the third Wednesday, and those born from the 21st through the 31st receive payments on the fourth Wednesday of every month.

That means the rest of October's schedule is:

• October 21: Payments will be made to beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th.
• October 28: Payments will be made to beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st.

Those who were born between the 1st and 10th already received their payments, on October 14.

People who received Social Security benefits before May 1997 follow a different timetable. These recipients are generally paid on the third of the month, while people receiving both Social Security and SSI usually receive their SSI on the first of the month and their Social Security on the third.

If a payment doesn’t arrive on the expected date, the SSA recommends waiting three additional mailing days before getting in touch.

How Much Can You Receive?

The amount an individual receives isn’t determined by their birthday. Instead, retirement benefits depend on factors including a worker's earnings history, the age they retire, and the age they started to claim benefits.

For example, a retiree could receive as much as $5,181 a month in 2026, but that figure applies to someone who earned the taxable maximum every year from age 22 and retires at age 70. Under the same earnings scenario, the maximum would be $4,152 at full retirement age and $2,969 at age 62.

Workers can start retirement benefits as early as age 62, but the SSA says that starting early will reduce their monthly payment. Waiting past full retirement age can increase benefits through delayed retirement credits, which continue until age 70.

To qualify for retirement benefits, workers generally need 40 Social Security credits, which typically takes about 10 years of work. In 2026, workers earn one credit for every $1,890 in covered earnings, with a maximum of four credits available each year.

The payments arriving on October 21 still reflect the 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), rather than the newly announced increase for 2027.

Social Security benefits increased by 2.8 percent for 2026, but on October 14, the SSA announced that Social Security and SSI payments will rise by 3.6 percent in 2027, affecting about 76 million Americans.

Nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will receive the adjustment beginning in January, while increased SSI payments to about 7.3 million recipients will begin on December 31, 2026.

The SSA estimates the 3.6 percent COLA will increase the average monthly benefit for retired workers by around $75 a month.

COLA is designed to help protect beneficiaries' purchasing power as prices rise. The annual adjustment is based on changes in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which is measured by the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Beneficiaries with personal “my Social Security” accounts will be able to view their 2027 COLA notices online starting in late November, while those without an online account will receive their updated benefit information by mail in December.

Newsweek has contacted The Senior Citizens League (TSCL), which closely tracks Social Security COLAs and focuses specifically on whether increases adequately reflect seniors' living costs, for comment.
