Bermuda has been added to the International Mathematical Olympiad’s [IMO] official country listings, marking another milestone as the Bermuda Mathematics Academy prepares to send the island’s first student team to the competition in Hungary in 2027.
A spokesperson said, “The Academy said it is particularly excited to have students from both public and private schools, as well as both male and female students, represented in the team heading to Hungary. The representation reflects the mathematical talent found across Bermuda and the opportunity for students from different backgrounds to come together to represent the island.
“The development follows Academy founder Dr. Kevin Minors’ attendance at the 2026 IMO in Shanghai, China, where he represented Bermuda as an observer and learned about the competition’s organisation, problem selection and marking procedures. The 2027 competition will take place in Budapest, Hungary.
“As preparations continue, the Academy is inviting the community to take part in its fourth local Mathematics Olympiad on Sunday, November 22, 2026.
“The Fall Olympiad is open to everyone aged 12 and over, including middle school students, high school students and adults. It offers an opportunity for anyone who enjoys mathematics to test their skills against other problem solvers from across the island.
“Participants will have exactly one hour to tackle five carefully selected Olympiad problems designed to reward creativity, logical reasoning and thinking outside the box. The questions will challenge competitors to explore unfamiliar ideas, stretch their intuition and find inventive approaches to solving problems.
“Top-performing students will be considered for selection to represent Bermuda at international mathematics competitions, including the 2027 IMO in Hungary. The local Olympiad therefore offers both a challenge for the wider community and an opportunity for young mathematicians to take a step towards international competition.
“The afternoon will begin at 2.00pm with a review of answers from the previous Olympiad. Lasting approximately one hour, this session is open to everyone, including those who did not compete in the previous event, and will provide an opportunity to explore the problems and their solutions.
“The Fall Olympiad itself will begin at 3.00pm and finish at 4.00pm. Participants only need to bring something to write with; no calculators are required.
“The competition entry fee is $20. Spaces are limited, and participants must register in advance to receive venue details at www.maths.bm.”
