Cyprus’s general government recorded a surplus of €1,589.1 million in the first eight months of 2026, equivalent to 4.1 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP).
The surplus compares with €1,269.3 million, or 3.5 per cent of GDP, in January-August 2025, according to preliminary figures.
Total revenue rose 6 per cent, or €615.8 million, to €10,842 million from €10,226.2 million a year earlier.
Income and wealth taxes grew 14.2 per cent to €3,080.1 million, from €2,697.7 million, while social contributions rose 7 per cent to €3,362.9 million, from €3,144.1 million.
Taxes on production and imports increased 8.2 per cent to €3,341.6 million, from €3,088.7 million. Net value added tax (VAT) receipts, after refunds, rose 14.7 per cent to €2,345.3 million, from €2,044.8 million.
Other revenue categories fell. Capital transfers dropped to €89.9 million from €191.6 million, current transfers fell 28.1 per cent to €217.3 million, and interest and dividends received declined 30.7 per cent to €85.2 million. Revenue from services was down 2.1 per cent at €665 million.
Total expenditure rose 3.3 per cent, or €296 million, to €9,252.9 million, from €8,957 million.
Intermediate consumption increased 10.3 per cent to €1,013.9 million, from €919.2 million, and social benefits rose 5.2 per cent to €3,803.7 million, from €3,614.8 million.
Compensation of employees, including imputed social contributions and pensions of civil servants, grew 1.6 per cent to €2,635.7 million, from €2,593.5 million. Interest paid increased 2.2 per cent to €298.5 million, from €292.1 million, and current transfers rose 3.7 per cent to €614.5 million, from €592.6 million.
The capital account fell 5.3 per cent to €819.8 million, from €865.3 million. Fixed capital investment declined 1.8 per cent to €603.1 million, while other capital transfers dropped 13.6 per cent to €216.7 million. Subsidies fell 16.1 per cent to €66.8 million, from €79.6 million.
