A Norwegian defense technology company has successfully showcased a containerized misile launch system. Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace demonstrated that the flexible deployment concept could expand the missile’s operational use across land-based positions, mobile vehicles, and naval platforms.
Known as the NSM Mission Module, the system packages up to four missile canisters inside a standard 20-foot shipping container, offering a potentially simpler way to deploy precision anti-ship strike capabilities.
Missile was launched from container-based unit
The test was conducted in Norway, where the missile was launched from a container-based unit holding up to four missiles. The objective was to verify safety aspects, logistical parameters related to handling and loading, as well as the system’s ability to manage pressure and blast effects during launch.
The prototype underwent testing at an undisclosed military range in Norway in early October 2026. The company-funded demonstration was intended to validate the concept, reduce integration risks, and help prospective customers assess the feasibility of adopting a containerized missile-launching solution.
The development reflects a broader shift in modern defense planning towards modular weapons systems that can be transported, repositioned, and integrated into different operational environments with fewer platform-specific modifications.
Containerized solution represents an alternative way of deploying missile capability
The containerized solution represents an alternative way of deploying missile capability. By integrating the launcher into a standard shipping container, the solution can be transported more easily, moved between locations, and incorporated into existing logistics and transportation networks. A launching container can be deployed, without modifications, from ships, trucks or directly from the ground.
“A containerized solution can be pre-positioned and deployed discreetly to support operations wherever the need arises. At the same time, it enables capabilities to be distributed across larger areas, providing greater operational flexibility and more deployment options,” said Ståle Mortensson, Vice President BD & Strategy in Missiles & Aerostructures.
“There is growing interest in concepts that enable capabilities to be distributed and repositioned across large geographic areas, with a containerized solution representing one possible approach.”
Naval Strike Missiles mounted on launcher mechanism
The NSM Mission Module is designed around a conventional 20-foot International Organization for Standardization (ISO) shipping container. Inside, the system accommodates four canisterized Naval Strike Missiles mounted on an elevating launcher mechanism.
The container’s roof opens before launch, allowing the internal launcher to rise into its firing position. Following launch, the mechanism can retract into the container, preserving the system’s compact configuration for transportation and storage.
Kongsberg has also integrated supporting equipment into the container, including a generator, an electronics compartment, and the mechanisms required to manage launch-related blast effects. Mission planning remains an external function.
This arrangement is significant because it brings several essential launcher components together within a transportable module. Rather than requiring every host platform to accommodate a permanently installed, purpose-built launcher, operators could potentially employ the container as a mission-specific payload, subject to the necessary integration, safety, and operational requirements.
