Overview:
API updates can cause unexpected problems when applications continue to rely on older response formats, field names or parameter requirements.

Learn how generated TypeScript types, specification comparison tools, continuous integration pipelines and contract testing can work together to identify potentially breaking changes before deployment.
A small API change can create a surprisingly big headache. A developer renames a field, updates a response format or makes a previously optional parameter mandatory. The code looks fine on their machine, the tests pass, and the update goes live. Then another application stops working because it still expects the old format.
This is a familiar problem for teams building web applications, mobile apps and services that depend on one another. The difficulty is not always making a change; it is knowing who or what that change might affect. TypeScript and OpenAPI can help developers spot these problems earlier, before a routine update turns into a production issue.
The Problem with Changing an API
Think of an API as a conversation between two applications. One sends a request, and the other returns information in an agreed format. As long as both sides understand that format, everything works as expected.
Now imagine an online store that returns a customer's name under the field ‘customerName’. A developer decides to rename it ‘fullName’ to make the code more consistent. The backend may work perfectly after the update, but an older mobile app still looking for ‘customerName’ will not know where to find the value.
The result could be a blank name, a broken screen or an error somewhere further down the application. Some changes are harmless. Adding an optional field, for example, will often leave existing clients unaffected. Removing a field, changing its data type or requiring a parameter that clients do not send is a different story.
The tricky part is that these problems are easy to overlook during ordinary code reviews, particularly when frontend and backend work happens in separate teams.

TypeScript Helps Developers Spot Mistakes
TypeScript gives JavaScript developers a way to describe the data their code expects. Instead of leaving every value open-ended, they can define the fields an object should contain and the types those fields should have.
If a developer changes the interface to use ‘fullName’ but forgets to update another part of the application that refers to ‘customerName’, TypeScript can flag the mismatch during compilation.
That saves time because the problem appears while the developer is working, rather than after a customer encounters it. There is a catch, though. TypeScript checks the types available to the application; it does not automatically know what a live server is actually returning. If the backend changes but the frontend's interface stays the same, the compiler may have nothing new to complain about.
For TypeScript to help with API changes, its definitions need to stay in step with the actual API contract.
OpenAPI Gives Teams a Shared Reference
OpenAPI provides a structured way to describe an API, including its endpoints, request parameters, response formats and data types. Instead of relying on a developer's memory or scattered documentation, a team can keep an OpenAPI specification under version control. Everyone can refer to the same description of how the API is supposed to behave.
Suppose the specification says that every customer response must include ‘customerName’ as a string. If a proposed update removes that field or changes its type, a comparison between the old and new specifications can flag the difference.
OpenAPI also supports documentation and client-code generation, making it useful beyond change detection. It does not identify every breaking change automatically, however. Teams need to compare specification versions or use tools that check whether an update remains compatible with existing clients.

Put TypeScript and OpenAPI to Work Together
The real value lies in connecting the two tools in teams, instead of having the tools operate independently of each other. Teams commonly start from writing or generating an OpenAPI specification, after which they use some code-generation tool to produce TypeScript types and/or a typed API client. The frontend developers consume the auto-generated types instead of manually producing their own.
When the specification changes, the types are regenerated, the compilation and appropriate tests are rerun. If there is a changed name in the specification that breaks the application, it is likely to be detected before being released.
Going a bit further, teams can have API compatibility tests as a part of their continuous integration (CI) pipeline. There exist several utilities, including ‘oasdiff’, that allow comparing OpenAPI documents and detecting potential changes that could break their consumers. Then, a CI rule could prevent a release until it is reviewed and possibly fixed.
It is most effective if the checks are performed automatically on every related change. The manual tests that are run occasionally cannot compare with the automatic ones in terms of reliability.
Why Automated Testing Still Matters
Not even a perfectly curated spec can reveal the full truth. Even if an endpoint responds with the right fields, it might have wrong values, or issues with authentication, or fail under certain circumstances.
Contract testing can be done to see if the real response from the API follows the described contract. It can also be done on other aspects that consumers care about like errors, pagination, and required request params.
Another form of safeguard is runtime validation. For instance, a tool such as Zod can validate the data coming into the app by using its schema while the app is running. This would be helpful when working with data from an external service that may have a different format.
They all play different roles; TypeScript detects programming errors, OpenAPI describes the contract, and tests validate real responses.

Make Compatibility Checks Routine
There is no need for an elaborate configuration for team to start using the technique. It suffices to put the OpenAPI specification under version control and use TypeScript type generation and compatibility checking in CI. In complex systems that consist of multiple independently built applications, documenting the breaking changes and allowing some time for adaptation will also be helpful. There are times when change is inevitable, but then again, migrating the application to a different version of the API or making a separate one might be a reasonable solution.
The point is to change the attitude towards compatibility check from post-release problem-solving to a proactive action that can reduce emergencies and misunderstandings between teams.
FAQs
1.What are API breaking changes?
API breaking changes are modifications that cause existing applications or integrations to stop working as expected. Examples include removing a response field, changing a data type, renaming a property or making an optional parameter mandatory. Such changes can disrupt applications that still depend on the previous API contract.
2.How does TypeScript help detect API breaking changes?
TypeScript checks whether code follows its declared types and interfaces. If a property is renamed or its type changes in the definitions used by an application, the compiler can flag affected code. However, TypeScript cannot automatically confirm that a live API response matches a manually maintained interface.
3.What is OpenAPI used for in API development?
OpenAPI is a standard for describing HTTP APIs in a structured format. It documents endpoints, request parameters, response schemas, data types and authentication requirements. Teams can use the specification to generate documentation and client code, validate API behavior and compare contract versions.
4.Can OpenAPI automatically detect every breaking change?
No. OpenAPI describes an API contract, but teams generally need specification comparison tools or automated validation to identify incompatible changes. Tools such as oasdiff can compare OpenAPI documents and flag potentially breaking modifications. Developers should still review the results because compatibility depends on how the API is used.
5.How do TypeScript and OpenAPI work together?
OpenAPI describes the expected API structure, while code-generation tools can convert that specification into TypeScript types or typed API clients. When the specification changes, developers can regenerate the types and run compilation checks. This helps identify affected application code before a change reaches production.
