The Washington Commanders are 1-4-1 on the season after suffering a 23-17 Week 6 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. There was a moment early in the second quarter that went viral, as it appeared head coach Dan Quinn was shocked after his team failed a fourth-and-two play, as it seemed as though Quinn was unaware that it was fourth down. His explanation for the incident led to NFL insider Mike Florio blasting him on Tuesday morning.
The 56-year-old informed media members during his postgame press conference that he was fully aware that it was fourth down on that particular play. But every word after that came off as confusing to Florio, who called out Quinn in his latest piece for Pro Football Talk.
“‘I definitely knew it was fourth down,’ Quinn said, before slipping into a word salad that was largely confusing and pivoted to him explaining that they planned to go for it on fourth down throughout the game because they expected it to be a higher-scoring contest,” Florio wrote.

The viral clip does not confirm whether or not Quinn was confused about what down it was early in the second quarter. However, many believe he asks if it was fourth down or not with lip-syncing. The veteran head coach’s body language also suggests he was a bit confused about what was going on. However, that’s completely up for interpretation.

Either way, things are just not going well for the Commanders to begin the season. Especially in the last two games, as Washington ended Week 5 with a 27-27 tie with the New York Giants after botching the final play and allowing the clock to run out before they could even spike the ball to give themselves a chance at winning the contest with a field goal.
We’ll see if Dan Quinn and his Commanders can bounce back in their next matchup. Washington has a bye in Week 7 before returning in Week 8 for a “Sunday Night Football” matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, assuming the NFL doesn’t flex that game.
