Eminent painter Jogen Chowdhury died at a hospital in Kolkata today following a prolonged battle with a rare blood cancer.
Chowdhury, 87, a former TMC MP, had been suffering from a myeloproliferative neoplasm, a rare type of blood cancer, for the past 14 months and was undergoing chemotherapy, Ruby General Hospital said in a statement.
He was admitted to the hospital in southeast Kolkata on October 16 and breathed his last at 10.15 am, it said.
Best known for his ability to merge traditional, often religious and mythical, iconography with a contemporary sensibility, Chowdhury worked across several mediums, including ink, watercolour, pastel and oil.
What was most notable about Chowdhury' works was his use of lines which spoke a lot about his state of the mind while making a painting.
