Maya Ka’an in Quintana Roo has been included in National Geographic’s “Best of the World 2027” selection, which features 25 destinations across six continents recommended for travel in the coming year.
The recognition goes beyond the state’s well-known coastal resorts to spotlight a region south of the Riviera Maya that offers more than beautiful beaches and archaeological sites.
The publication highlights the presence of 78 indigenous Maya communities and their deep connection to the jungles, lagoons and the rest of the natural landscape, as well as to the traditions of the region.
“In a place often defined by mass tourism, Maya Ka’an unites wilderness and living Indigenous culture,” National Geographic said.
What stands out about Maya Ka’an is its community-based tourism, the publication said, offering a way to explore the region through activities involving its local residents. The magazine highlights encounters with Maya families, shared meals, and tours that link the landscape with the local knowledge.
Tourism Minister Josefina Rodríguez Zamora said the international recognition reflects the value of a model promoted by the Mexican government — one designed to extend the benefits of tourism to more communities across the country, strengthen local economies, and preserve Mexico’s biocultural wealth.
“Maya Ka’an demonstrates that it is possible to offer authentic experiences, conserve our natural and cultural heritage, and create opportunities for families,” she noted. “We want this model to be strengthened and expanded to more regions of the country, because tourism should translate into well-being and shared prosperity.”
Activities recommended by the travel magazine include embroidery workshops in X-Pichil, explorations of traditional cuisine in Señor, and cultural activities in Tihosuco and Chunhuhub, offering travelers a way to engage with Maya culture through its contemporary practices, as well as its historical heritage.
Also mentioned are kayaking in the turquoise waters of the Muyil lagoon, snorkeling and a marine safari to spot dolphins and sea turtles.
Accessing this once secluded region is now easier through upgraded roads and connections from the Maya Train to the international gateways of Cancún and Tulum.
