Former NFL MVP sends warning to Giants over J.J. McCarthy starting decision originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Giants have decided to give J.J. McCarthy the keys to the quarterback room, a decision that doesn't come as much of a surprise.
After trading for McCarthy, there was an obvious thought that the Giants were going to lean on him to help them win games at a very high level.
McCarthy didn't play badly in Week 6 against the New Orleans Saints, throwing for 243 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
There were moments when he didn't look great, completing just 52.4% of his passes, but he also did some positive things, and the Giants hope that will continue if he gets a full-time start.
As for one former NFL MVP, he doesn't believe that's going to be the case. He thinks that McCarthy still has a lot to learn in this league, though I don't necessarily view that as a bad thing.
“He’s still got a lot to do,” Rich Gannon admitted when asked about McCarthy in an interview with casino.org, H/T Heavy. “His accuracy, decision-making, and his lack of anticipation are all areas of concern for me … The game is going way too fast for him. He must step up and improve that side of his game. I think he’s figuring out that the NFL is not the Big Ten.”
At only 23 years old, asking too much of McCarthy, who has appeared in only 12 games in his NFL career, would be a bit much.
The reality for guys like him is that they have a lot to learn in this league, and that's not a bad thing. McCarthy, a first-round pick many hoped would be the answer at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, certainly had a lot of hype.
However, everyone has a different timeline in this league. If he can figure some things out, which he should in New York, there's reason to believe he can at least be a serviceable option under center.
