The renovated Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA) has attracted international attention through social media posts by two-time Formula 1 world champion Mika Häkkinen, following the “Allwyn x McLaren Racing Live in Athens” event held on 3 October.
The Finnish racing legend shared photographs from his visit to the Olympic complex, bringing its renewed appearance to the attention of his international followers.
Häkkinen’s presence, alongside a McLaren Formula 1 car, gave the landmark Athens sports venue an international spotlight. Photographs highlighted the renovated Agora and the distinctive architectural structures designed by Santiago Calatrava, showcasing OAKA’s architectural identity to a global audience.
The McLaren car, representing Formula 1’s speed and technological innovation, stood alongside Calatrava’s striking architectural lines to create a visually distinctive setting. Under the Attic sunlight, the renovated Agora became a focal point of the event, connecting the international profile of Formula 1 with Athens’ Olympic heritage.
OAKA seeks a renewed international profile
Häkkinen’s social media posts provided an opportunity to showcase OAKA’s capacity to host major sporting and entertainment events and attract attention beyond Greece.
The images also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve and make better use of the complex’s facilities. The aim is to develop OAKA into a modern, functional and safe venue for athletes, visitors and the wider public while preserving its distinctive historical character.
The renewed Agora forms part of a broader effort to restore the complex’s role as a prominent sporting and public venue.
OAKA’s international exposure through figures such as Häkkinen reinforces its potential to host high-profile events and reach audiences beyond Greece. The complex combines its Olympic legacy with architectural landmarks and facilities that organisers can use for major sporting and entertainment occasions.
