Mining plays vital role, govt mobilised Rs 181 crore: Meghalaya CM

Shillong, October 14 (IANS): Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday called for a transition towards scientific and sustainable mining, emphasising that mineral wealth must translate into long-term economic opportunities and improved living standards for communities, as the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) completed a decade of operation. While attending a function here, CM Sangma said mining continued to play a significant role in Meghalaya's economy, generating revenue and providing livelihoods to thousands of people. He stressed that the state's mining practices must evolve towards safer and more sustainable methods while taking into account local conditions and the traditional system of community land ownership.Highlighting the DMF's performance over the past 10 years, the Chief Minister said the foundation had mobilised Rs 181 crore in the state and sanctioned 923 projects, of which 542 had been completed. The completed initiatives cover a range of essential services and community infrastructure, including classrooms, healthcare facilities, drinking water supply networks and footbridges designed to withstand monsoon conditions.Projects have also focused on environmental restoration through water conservation structures and tree plantation in quarry areas.Sangma said the focus should now extend beyond infrastructure creation to developing assets that generate sustainable incomes and strengthen local economies.Citing examples of initiatives supported through DMF funding, he referred to an eco-tourism park and a value-added bee products unit at Nengmandalgre, silkworm rearing activities and a weaving centre in Ri Bhoi district, and a district emporium promoting locally produced goods. He said investments in tourism, food processing and local enterprises could help Meghalaya build a regenerative economy in which the benefits of mineral resources continue to support communities over the long term. The Chief Minister also urged district administrations to ensure that available DMF funds were utilised effectively and that projects under implementation were completed without unnecessary delays. He called for closer coordination between district authorities and local communities to maximise the impact of development initiatives funded through the foundation. The DMF was established to support people and areas affected by mining-related activities, with funds directed towards local development and essential services.Sangma underscored the need to balance the economic importance of mining with environmental protection, community welfare and livelihood diversification, as Meghalaya seeks to strengthen the long-term benefits of its mineral resources.
