A passenger suffered a burn after a power bank overheated and began smoking during a flight from Hong Kong to Jeju.
The Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters said it received a report at about 6:22 a.m. on the 25th that a passenger had been burned by smoke from an overheating power bank aboard a Hong Kong Express flight from Hong Kong that was scheduled to land at Jeju International Airport.
According to fire authorities, smoke came from a power bank stored in a bag under a passenger's seat, and the injury occurred as the passenger was removing the device. A Chinese woman in her 50s suffered a burn to her left thumb. Immediately after the incident, cabin crew placed the power bank in a heat-resistant containment bag — equipment prepared for responding to battery fires on board — and submerged it in water.
The aircraft was carrying 236 passengers and seven crew members. Fire authorities arrived at Jeju International Airport at about 6:32 a.m. and waited for the plane to land. After the landing, they checked the cabin for any additional fire risk and administered first aid to the injured passenger, who declined transport, saying she would go to a hospital on her own.
