The Appellate Division has scheduled 8 December for the final hearing of appeals in the 2012 murder of tailor-shop worker Biswajit Das, who was hacked and beaten to death in broad daylight in Old Dhaka.
Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kazal told journalists that Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Md Rezaul Haque fixed the date today (19 October) following a prosecution petition seeking an expedited hearing.
Earlier in the day, the attorney general said the prosecution had applied to the relevant branch of the Appellate Division to expedite the hearing.
On 18 December 2014, Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 sentenced eight people to death and 13 others to life imprisonment over the killing.
The High Court subsequently heard the death references and appeals against the sentences. On 6 August 2017, it upheld the death sentences of Rafiqul Islam Shakil and Rajon Talukder.
The High Court acquitted Saiful Islam and Qayyum Miah Tipu of the death sentences while commuting the death sentences of Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid, Emdadul Haque Emdad, GM Rasheduzzaman Shaon and Mir Md Noor-e-Alam Limon to life imprisonment.
The court also acquitted AHM Kibria and Golam Mostafa, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court.
The life sentences of the remaining 11 people sentenced by the trial court were upheld, as they had not appealed against the verdict.
They are Khandaker Yunus Ali, Tariq Bin Johar, Alauddin, Obaidul Kader, Imran Hossain, Azizur Rahman, Al Amin Sheikh, Rafiqul Islam, Monirul Haque Pavel, Kamrul Hasan and Mosharraf Hossain.
Both prosecution and defence lawyers later appealed against the High Court verdict, prompting the prosecution's latest move to expedite the hearing.
Biswajit was killed on 9 December 2012 in front of Victoria Park in Old Dhaka during an 18-party alliance blockade programme.
The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police submitted a charge sheet against 21 Chhatra League members on 5 March 2013 over the killing.
