A monument to Monte Melkonian is nearing completion in Fresno, California, supported by donations from 180 local residents. The City of Fresno has issued the permit for the statue’s installation, and construction is expected to be completed within a month, the Armenian-American Information Center informed Armenian News-NEWS.am.
The project began with an idea from Dr. Garo Khachikian, a physician and community leader. Members of Fresno’s Armenian community joined the effort, some donating money, others contributing their labor. Each helped in whatever way they could.
“It’s important that we never forget our heroes. We want parents to bring their children to this statue and tell them about Monte—who he was, how he lived, and what he fought for. Our children need to know his story. I’m grateful to everyone who has donated. Every contribution has been needed, and it is their support that is helping us see this project through,” Khachikian said.
The granite statue will stand beside the monument to Soghomon Tehlirian. Its stone-clad pedestal will resemble a rock formation, evoking the mountains of Armenia. Inscriptions in Armenian and English will recount Melkonian’s life and military service, making his story accessible to visitors who do not read Armenian.
The monument’s architects are Shant Yemenjian and George Kilejian, and its sculptor is Maghakia Simonyan. Construction is being carried out by Jivan Bznuni.
Melkonian was killed in action on June 12, 1993, at the age of 35. Those who knew him remember his courage, discipline, and unwavering devotion to his homeland. The Fresno monument will help preserve that memory and introduce his story to people who never knew him.
A large community celebration is planned for the unveiling. The date of the ceremony will be announced later.
