Two years ago, Puma launched an experimental super shoe that intentionally flouted race regulations with a massive stack height and an over-the-top propulsion system. That shoe is now getting an upgrade with no more concern for the rules.
The Puma Fast RB Nitro Elite 2 boasts the most energy return the brand has ever produced in a shoe, thanks in part to two fused carbon fiber plates that act as a spring board. Revised midsole geometry gives the Nitrofoam Elite more room to operate, and the Ultraweave upper has been made more breathable and lightweight.
“With the Fast-RB 2, we set out to take rule breaking to the next level,” Romain Girard, Puma vice president of innovation, said in a press release. “We’ve created a shoe that delivers the highest energy return we’ve ever recorded in our testing, within an incredibly lightweight package. Two years of innovation, lab testing and collaboration with athletes have gone into refining the experience, bringing together groundbreaking performance and the pure joy of running.”
While more detailed specs haven’t yet been revealed, its predecessor came in with a 58mm stack height, 18mm above what’s allowed by World Athletics for professional races. What has been confirmed is that the heel-to-toe drop has been reduced to 8mm from 12mm, while the weight drops by more than 100 grams to now hit 250 grams for a men’s size 9.
It’s important to point out that shoe regulations only apply to the professionals, so there’s nothing to stop and amateur from lacing up the Puma Fast RB Nitro Elite 2 in their own race.
The Puma Fast RB Nitro Elite 2 will release Wednesday through Puma’s website, select locations of its stores and third-party retailers. Pricing is set at approximately $391.
