Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba is putting together another remarkable season, and his production could eventually earn him a place in NFL history.
The reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year has become the centerpiece of Seattle's passing attack, accounting for nearly half of the team's receiving yards through the opening six weeks.
According to ESPN Insights, Smith-Njigba has accounted for approximately 49% of the Seahawks' receiving yards this season, the highest percentage of any player in the NFL. If he maintains or improves that pace, the 24-year-old could challenge one of the league's most impressive single-season receiving records.
The record in question is not simply about total receiving yards. Instead, it measures how much of a team's passing production comes from one individual player.
Former Houston Oilers wide receiver Ken Burrough accounted for approximately 50.6% of his team's receiving yards during the 1975 season, a remarkable accomplishment that has stood for more than five decades.
Smith-Njigba's current production puts him within striking distance of that historic mark. His latest performance provided another example of just how important he has become to Seattle's offense.
During Thursday night's matchup against the Denver Broncos, Smith-Njigba finished with 12 receptions for 134 yards, leading the Seahawks in receiving despite their 17-14 overtime loss.
The performance brought his season totals to 49 receptions for 717 yards and seven touchdowns through six games.
Smith-Njigba is now averaging 119.5 receiving yards per game, putting him on pace for approximately 2,032 yards over a 17-game season. That pace would also put him in position to challenge Calvin Johnson's NFL single-season receiving record of 1,964 yards, set with the Detroit Lions in 2012.
However, Smith-Njigba's share of Seattle's receiving production may be even more impressive than his individual yardage totals.
The Seahawks have several other experienced receiving options, including Cooper Kupp and Rashid Shaheed, but Smith-Njigba continues to command a significant portion of the passing offense.
His ability to create separation, make contested catches and turn routine completions into substantial gains has made him quarterback Sam Darnold's most productive target. That connection has become especially important as Seattle works through an inconsistent start to the season.
The Seahawks entered Thursday's matchup looking to bounce back from a loss to the San Francisco 49ers, but another difficult offensive performance left them with a 3-3 record.
Despite those struggles, Smith-Njigba has remained remarkably consistent.
He has surpassed 100 receiving yards in five of Seattle's first six games, including a 155-yard, three-touchdown performance against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2.
His success builds on an outstanding 2025 campaign that established him among the NFL's elite receivers. Last season, Smith-Njigba caught 119 passes for a franchise-record 1,793 yards and 10 touchdowns. He led the NFL in receiving yards, earned first-team All-Pro honors and helped Seattle capture its second Super Bowl championship.
The performance also earned him AP Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Rather than slowing down after his breakout season, Smith-Njigba has continued to elevate his game. However, maintaining such a significant share of Seattle's receiving production over the remainder of the season will be a challenge.
As Smith-Njigba continues to produce at a high level, opposing defenses could devote even more attention to limiting his impact. That could force quarterback Sam Darnold to rely more heavily on other receiving options.

Seattle may also need greater contributions from its supporting cast to keep defenses from focusing too much attention on its top receiver. Still, Smith-Njigba has demonstrated an ability to produce even when defenses know he is the Seahawks' primary receiving threat.
With 11 regular-season games remaining, there is plenty of football left before any records can be broken.
But if Smith-Njigba continues producing at his current rate, he could finish the season with more than another impressive statistical achievement.
He could establish one of the most dominant individual receiving campaigns in NFL history.
