Tesla has a new school, and the students are made of metal. The company introduced Optimus Academy, a training program where its humanoid robots learn real-world tasks by actually doing them.
The reveal came during Tesla’s Q3 2026 earnings call on October 21, 2026. It addresses a problem that has quietly shadowed the Optimus project from the start: where does a robot get its experience?
Inside Optimus Academy
Tesla describes the Academy as a large-scale internal initiative. Early Optimus units will be put to work on real-world tasks, and the data they generate will feed back into the robots’ artificial intelligence models.
The method resembles what AI researchers call “self-play.” The robots improve by attempting tasks, logging what happens, and refining their models from the results.
CEO Elon Musk compared the process to how a toddler learns.
Scale is where the plan gets ambitious. Musk indicated that Tesla intends to produce between 10,000 to 20,000 Optimus robots specifically for the Academy.
The goal of that fleet is scalable task practice and rapid model refinement.
Tesla is also preparing a new video, expected within the next couple of months, to show the robots performing AI-driven tasks. The company frames this as evidence of a commitment to practical training rather than scripted demonstrations.
Production is underway, with caveats
The Academy announcement arrived alongside a manufacturing milestone. Tesla has started producing Optimus at its Fremont, California factory.
The robots are being built on a dedicated line that originally served Model S and X production. Tesla called these units its first “production-quality bots.”
The company was candid about where things stand. Tesla said the manufacturing process has been validated for commercial purposes, but it acknowledged the production ramp remains at an early and somewhat challenging stage.
Tesla is planning for that to change. A larger Optimus production facility is under construction in Austin, Texas, which would expand the company’s manufacturing capacity.
The hardware is also scheduled for an upgrade. Tesla plans to integrate its AI5 chip into Optimus robots around April 2027.
External deliveries, meaning robots that leave Tesla’s own facilities for outside customers, are targeted for the end of 2027.
Why Tesla needs a robot school
Tesla’s car business has a built-in advantage that Optimus lacks. Its vehicles on the road form a vast real-world fleet that continuously generates data for the company’s AI systems.
Humanoid robots have no equivalent. There is no installed base of millions of Optimus units wandering through warehouses and kitchens, collecting data while their owners go about their day.
Optimus Academy is Tesla’s workaround. If the company cannot wait for customers to build the fleet, it will build one itself and put it to work learning.
What this means
The Academy reframes how to think about Optimus production numbers. The first wave of 10,000 to 20,000 robots is not primarily a sales figure; Musk positioned it as a training fleet.
The timeline also stacks several dependencies on top of one another. The AI5 chip is expected around April 2027, and external deliveries are targeted for the end of 2027.
The upcoming video will be the first public look at how well the approach is working. Watch for whether the tasks shown are genuinely novel and unscripted, because that is the claim Tesla is staking its training philosophy on.
Progress on the Austin facility, AI5 integration around April 2027, and whether external deliveries land by the end of 2027 will show whether Optimus Academy is producing graduates or just very well-funded students.
