October 19, World (LNW): Binod Chaudhary, Nepal’s only billionaire on the Forbes list, has been elected a vice-president of the Nepali Congress through its inclusive category, securing a senior organisational position despite losing his parliamentary seat earlier in 2026.
Results published on October 12 show that he obtained 1,745 votes at the party’s 15th General Convention, defeating his nearest rival, Jeevan Pariyar, by 87 votes. His victory represents a significant comeback within the party rather than a return to Parliament.
Two details in the accompanying account require correction. Madhu Acharya was not defeated by Chandra Bhandari: both men were elected because there were two open-category vice-presidential positions. Moreover, although some election reports describe Chaudhary as 70, he was born on April 14, 1955 and was therefore 71 at the October 2026 convention; Forbes also lists his age as 71.
The Result and the Reconfigured Leadership
Chaudhary’s victory came in a competitive inclusive-category contest. Pariyar received 1,658 votes, followed by Farmullah Mansoor with 1,144, Sita Gurung with 1,112 and Ranjit Karna with 562. The narrow margin between the leading two candidates makes the result less a sweeping endorsement than a closely fought success within the convention electorate.
The wider leadership results clarify how Chaudhary fits into the party’s revised structure. Under its amended statute, Congress has five vice-presidents, including a senior vice-president. The positions were filled as follows:
- Senior vice-president: Bishwa Prakash Sharma, elected unopposed.
- Open-category vice-presidents: Chandra Kant Bhandari, with 3,735 votes, and Madhu Acharya, with 2,342.
- Women’s vice-president: Pushpa Bhusal, elected unopposed.
- Inclusive-category vice-president: Binod Chaudhary, with 1,745 votes.
These results form part of a broader leadership transition centred on Gagan Thapa, who secured the party presidency with 93.88 per cent of the vote. Sharma’s unopposed election alongside him consolidated the position of two leaders long associated with demands for generational change within Congress. Chaudhary’s elevation places a prominent industrialist within this reorganised leadership team.
From Business Leadership to Parliamentary Politics
Chaudhary’s political career has developed alongside, rather than separately from, his business interests. Before entering national representative institutions, he held leadership positions in the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Confederation of Nepalese Industries. These roles established him as an influential private-sector figure before his formal parliamentary career began.
His entry into national politics came in 2008, when the Communist Party of Nepal–Unified Marxist–Leninist, generally known as the CPN-UML, selected him for the first Constituent Assembly through proportional representation. This was a party-list route into the constitution-making body, not a victory in a directly contested constituency.
In 2017, Chaudhary joined the Nepali Congress. He subsequently strengthened his organisational position at its 14th General Convention, winning a central committee seat through the Madhesi quota with 2,206 votes. His latest success therefore continues an established pattern: representative categories within party structures have provided important avenues for his advancement.
However, his political record is not confined to party lists and internal elections. In 2022, he won the House of Representatives election from Nawalparasi West constituency 1 as a Congress candidate, demonstrating that he could also secure a direct constituency mandate. He lost that seat in the 2026 parliamentary election to Bikram Khanal of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, or RSP.
The distinction matters. His October victory restores and enhances his standing inside Congress, but it does not reverse the constituency electorate’s decision or confer a parliamentary seat.

Factional Realignment and Political Recovery
Chaudhary’s rise also reflects changing alliances within Congress. Previously associated with former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba, he moved towards Gagan Thapa’s group following the Gen Z movement. He participated in the special convention organised under Thapa’s leadership before securing the vice-presidency at the regular 15th convention.
He was not alone in crossing established factional boundaries. Reporting on the convention identifies other politicians formerly associated with Deuba who advanced within the Thapa-led structure, including Udaya Shumsher Rana and Dila Sangroula. Their progress indicates a wider redistribution of influence rather than an isolated accommodation for Chaudhary.
His success illustrates the difference between public electoral support and internal party influence. Constituency voters choose parliamentary representatives, while convention delegates determine organisational leadership. A politician may consequently lose a national election yet retain the relationships, recognition and delegate support necessary to win senior party office. Chaudhary’s contrasting results in 2026 demonstrate precisely that distinction.
The Business Empire Behind the Political Profile
Chaudhary’s prominence rests on an extensive commercial network. Forbes identifies him as Nepal’s sole billionaire and estimates his real-time net worth at US$2.1 billion as of October 18, 2026. Its profile names a controlling stake in Nabil Bank and CG Foods, the maker of Wai Wai noodles, among his principal assets. It also records hotel interests comprising 143 owned and managed properties, including partnerships with India’s Taj hotel chain.
Onlinekhabar reports that the Chaudhary Group and CG Corp Global business network encompasses 160 companies and 123 brands across 27 countries on five continents. These figures describe the reported scale of the group’s commercial interests; they should not be interpreted as 160 businesses wholly owned personally by Chaudhary.
His international business profile gives him visibility beyond Nepal’s political establishment and experience relevant to debates about investment, manufacturing, banking and tourism. Nevertheless, commercial success and political legitimacy remain different measures. The parliamentary defeat shows why business stature cannot automatically be equated with electoral popularity.

There is also a sourcing qualification concerning his wealth. Although Onlinekhabar attributes the US$2.1 billion figure to Forbes’ 2025 list, Forbes’ accessible profile directly supports that valuation for October 2026. The more defensible wording for current publication is therefore “Forbes estimates his wealth at US$2.1 billion”, with the valuation date specified, rather than presenting the disputed historical attribution as settled.
Inclusion, Accountability and the Significance of His Election
Chaudhary’s progression through the Madhesi central committee quota and the inclusive vice-presidential category brings attention to how Congress’s representative arrangements operate. His record demonstrates that these mechanisms can elevate figures who combine a qualifying representative identity with considerable economic and organisational influence. It does not, by itself, establish any breach of party rules.
Analytically, his election raises two connected questions: how effectively inclusive leadership positions broaden representation, and how a party manages the overlap between senior political responsibility and extensive commercial interests. These are questions of institutional accountability, not evidence of wrongdoing by Chaudhary.
His immediate significance lies in the position he now occupies: a nationally recognised businessman, a former UML representative, a former directly elected Congress parliamentarian and now a senior Congress office-holder under Thapa. His trajectory shows that parliamentary defeat need not end a political career when a politician retains influence within the party organisation. Whether that organisational recovery can eventually translate into renewed public confidence remains unresolved.
