Trade between Afghanistan and Pakistan has declined by 95 percent compared with the previous fiscal year amid rising tensions and the closure of border crossings, Pakistani media have reported.
Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper reported on Monday, October 19, that the value of bilateral trade between the two countries fell from $1.3 billion in the 2024–2025 fiscal year to $358 million in the 2025–2026 fiscal year.
According to the report, the Torkham border crossing was closed following clashes between the two countries on October 12, 2025.
In addition to Torkham, other border crossings, including Kharlachi, Ghulam Khan and Angoor Adda in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, as well as the Chaman crossing in Balochistan province, have also remained closed to commercial activity.
The report added that Pakistani industries, particularly the transport and pharmaceutical sectors, have suffered heavy losses since the borders were closed on October 12, 2025.
Islamabad says border restrictions will remain in place until the Taliban take practical action against armed groups operating in Afghanistan.
