Summary
- Smash 64 Recompiled is a human-made project that aims to deliver high FPS, low input lag, an ultrawide UI, and mod support.
- It supports Smash Remix and includes no Nintendo assets; you'll need your own ROM/cartridge rip.
- The team touts no "AI slop" and aims to outshine AI-built ports like Battleship and melee-PC.
I'm a big fan of the recent boom in AI-assisted retro video game PC ports, but it's easy to see that many are hastily thrown together with tools like Claude. This latest recompilation, a port of the Nintendo 64 classic Super Smash Bros., pitches itself as free of "AI slop," unlike Battleship, a popular AI-assisted port criticized for various issues (there's also melee-pc, a Super Smash Bros. port I covered a few weeks ago).
According to a recent trailer for Smash 64 Recompiled, the PC port features high-frame support, low-input lag, a properly scaled UI for ultrawide displays, and day-one mod and texture support through N64Recomp (via Time Extension). Smash 64 Recompiled's human-led development team features SrBananaMan64 and Boopie.
"This port is not AI slop!," wrote SrBananaMan64 in a comment under the port's announcement trailer. "It was made to set a better example of what a recomp is like. This started development back in October of 2024 by ZestyDev, where he got the game running with no enhancements. I noticed development had stalled for that port, so I decided to try it for myself on a fresh repository. Development recently picked up in mid-September, with the help of a new dev named Boopie."
The upcoming human-made PC port features support for Smash Remix
Like nearly all recent recompilations, no Nintendo-owned assets will be included in the release
Apart from general mod support, another notable feature is compatibility with Smash Remix, a popular Super Smash Bros. mod that adds new characters, courses, items, music, and more. It essentially turns Super Smash Bros. into the N64 sequel the fighting game series never got. Like all recomps, it includes no Nintendo-owned assets. Instead, players will need to rip their own cartridge or acquire the ROM elsewhere to play Smash 64 Recompiled.
In a space increasingly full of nearly identical projects created almost entirely with the help of Claude, it's refreshing to come across an entirely human-made retro game recompilation effort. Hopefully, this means Smash 64 Recompiled will be a notable improvement over Battleship and melee-PC. It's still unclear when the team behind Smash 64 Recompiled plans to release the port, but since they're making a public announcement, I'd bet a beta release isn't far off. The port's trailer just says that it's "coming soon."
Over the past few weeks, we've seen several old-school game ports, including Halo: Combat Evolved and Super Mario 64, get the browser-port treatment.
