Luka Doncic has been accused of using his complaints to referees as an excuse to avoid defensive work, with NBA personality Max Kellerman suggesting the Los Angeles Lakers star is deliberately making life easier for himself.
Speaking on his Game Over podcast, Kellerman criticised Doncic’s habit of arguing with officials after offensive possessions and claimed it was contributing to his defensive struggles.
The criticism comes as Doncic enters a new chapter with the Lakers, having become the franchise’s leading star following LeBron James’ departure.
Max Kellerman accuses Luka Doncic of avoiding defensive responsibilities
Kellerman believes Doncic’s frequent complaints to referees serve a purpose beyond expressing frustration over missed calls.
“On defense, do you know why Luka Doncic complains to the refs on every offensive possession? It’s very obvious. Because if you’re complaining to the refs, you don’t have to run back down the floor on defense,” Kellerman said.
He argued that the habitleaves the Lakers vulnerable in transition, forcing their teammates to defend without everyone getting back into position.
“It’s No. 1. Beyond not moving his feet or everything. No. 1 is it’s five-on-four on the other end of the floor because he thinks he’s being slick, complaining as though everyone can’t see,” Kellerman added. “No, you’re just being lazy. Get up and run your a– back on defense.”
The comments raise questions about how the Lakers can improve defensively, particularly with Doncic and Austin Reaves both expected to play major roles in the team’s offence.
However, Doncic has already shown signs of trying to address one aspect of his behaviour. During his early-season exchanges with Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, the Slovenian avoided receiving a technical foul by keeping his emotions under control.
Doncic has also made reducing his complaints and technical fouls a personal goal, something Lakers head coach JJ Redick has reportedly encouraged.
That gives the 27-year-old an opportunity to respond to criticism through his performances rather than words.
Kellerman’s accusation is a harsh one, but Doncic has the talent to silence his critics. If he can maintain his offensive production while showing greater defensive commitment, he will give the Lakers a stronger foundation for their season.
