In a statement, the council called on Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to halt what it described as unilateral actions and return to the negotiating table to resolve the country’s political dispute.
The council said an inclusive political agreement was needed to determine the way forward for elections. It warned that decisions taken without broad agreement could deepen political tensions and undermine trust between the country’s political stakeholders.
“We are ready for genuine dialogue to reach an electoral agreement and a realistic, implementable timetable,” the statement said.
The council also called on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to abandon what it described as unilateral measures and return to negotiations.
It warned that, if the president maintains his current position, the council would pursue what it called other constitutional and political avenues to protect the Somali people’s right to elect a legitimate leadership.
The Somali Future Council reiterated the importance of reaching a political agreement that could provide the basis for elections accepted by all sides.
The statement comes amid continuing political disagreements in Somalia over the country’s electoral process and the arrangements needed to reach a consensus among political actors.
