JEONNAM-GWANGJU — A road in Gwangsan District of Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City will carry the name "Semiconductor Road."
Gwangsan District said on the 19th that the honorary road name is a symbolic step to publicize its drive to foster the semiconductor industry and attract companies to the Honam regional semiconductor national industrial complex. The name was approved by the district's address information committee on Oct. 16.
The designated stretch covers part of Sangmu-daero, running from the Songjeong Bridge 1 junction to the area near the Geungnakgyo intersection. The total length is 5,855 meters.
An honorary road name does not replace an existing road-name address. The legal address system remains unchanged. It is a symbolic designation that conveys a region's future strategy and industrial vision through a road name.
The district plans to install honorary road name signs along the stretch. Through the signs, it aims to explain the meaning of "Semiconductor Road" and raise public interest in the semiconductor industry.
The designation is seen as a demonstration of Gwangsan District's commitment to building a semiconductor cluster in the Honam region. It is also significant in that the district has inscribed its goals of attracting an industrial complex and corporate investment on the city's streets rather than in administrative documents.
"I hope the honorary road name 'Semiconductor Road' will symbolize the region's determination to grow and serve as an occasion to raise interest in the semiconductor industry," Gwangsan District Mayor Park Byung-gyu said.
The district plans to use "Semiconductor Road" to actively promote, at home and abroad, its message of emerging as a city centered on future industries.
