Sydney Sweeney’s The Housemaid has climbed to the top of HBO Max’s movie charts in the United States. The 2025 psychological thriller returned to the spotlight after arriving on the streaming platform on October 9. It reached number one by October 11 and maintained its position as of October 12.
Directed by Paul Feig and written by Rebecca Sonnenshine, the film adapts Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel of the same name. Sweeney plays Millie Calloway, a formerly incarcerated woman who accepts a live-in maid job with Nina Winchester, played by Amanda Seyfried. However, Millie soon discovers troubling secrets within the household and becomes increasingly drawn into the family’s complicated relationships.

The film opened in cinemas in December 2025 and earned $400.5 million worldwide against a reported $35 million budget. Critics also gave the thriller positive reviews, helping establish it as a major box-office success. Lionsgate subsequently approved a sequel, building on the film’s strong audience response.
The Housemaid first arrived on Starz in April 2026 before moving to HBO Max on October 9. According to streaming rankings tracker FlixPatrol, the film quickly overtook Backrooms, directed by Kane Parsons, and Evil Dead Burn. Both titles had enjoyed strong runs on the platform before Sweeney’s thriller claimed the top position.

The film’s latest streaming success gives the franchise fresh momentum ahead of its planned sequel, which is expected in December 2027. However, Amanda Seyfried’s return remains unconfirmed, creating uncertainty about the follow-up’s cast. The sequel draws inspiration from McFadden’s book The Housemaid’s Secret, in which Millie works for a different family and Nina Winchester does not feature.
Paul Feig and Lionsgate will therefore need to decide how the sequel develops its story and whether Seyfried will reprise her role. For now, the original film’s box-office earnings and renewed streaming popularity offer encouraging signs for the franchise. Its continued performance on HBO Max could help sustain audience interest while fans wait for the next installment.
