Safaricom has explained why some customers find their Fuliza overdraft limit stuck at KSh 100 even when they use M-PESA and other Safaricom services on a daily basis, clarifying that limit increases follow a credit assessment rather than an automatic reward for frequent activity.

The clarification was prompted by a complaint posted on X on October 22, 2026, by a customer identified as K'ande, who wrote:
"@SafaricomPLC why does my fuliza remain @ 100 for so long yet I transact with my number in everything."
Safaricom responded directly, stating:
"Hello K'ande. We understand how disappointing it can be when your Fuliza limit remains at KSh 100 despite regularly transacting on your line. Kindly note that Fuliza limit increases are determined by NCBA Bank based on factors such as your loan repayment history, airtime usage, M-PESA transactions and overall repayment patterns. Regular transactions alone do not guarantee a limit increase."
What Determines a Customer's Fuliza Limit
Fuliza operates as a credit facility, not a loyalty programme. NCBA Bank and KCB Bank, both partners in the service, run automated assessments that factor in a customer's loan repayment history, CRB status, savings in M-Shwari and KCB M-PESA accounts, and overall borrowing behaviour.
A customer who sends and receives money daily but has a poor repayment record or adverse CRB listing can remain at the minimum limit, while another with lower transaction volumes but stronger credit behaviour may receive a higher ceiling.
Limits can also decline. Missed repayments, overdue Okoa Jahazi balances, and low service usage can all pull a limit downward. Customers who have been on the Safaricom network for fewer than six months typically receive a zero limit until sufficient usage history accumulates.
If a Fuliza balance goes unpaid for 30 days, access to the overdraft is suspended until the outstanding amount is fully settled.
Steps Customers Can Take to Improve Their Limit
Safaricom has pointed customers to several actions, though none guarantees a higher limit. The review remains automated and is carried out at the bank's discretion, with no fixed timeline.
Customers can request a monthly limit review by dialling *334#, selecting 00 for Fuliza M-PESA, and choosing the "Refresh My Limit" option. Safaricom has previously noted:
"Please note that limit review is an automated process done at the bank's discretion. There is no specific timeline for review."
Beyond the monthly refresh, customers are advised to repay Fuliza promptly since balances are deducted automatically from incoming M-PESA deposits, settle other mobile loans such as M-Shwari and KCB M-PESA on time, maintain a clean CRB record, and build savings within Safaricom's financial products.
Fuliza was launched in January 2019 and has grown into one of Kenya's most widely used short-term credit products.
According to NCBA Group data released in March 2026, Kenyans borrowed KSh 1.24 trillion through the facility in 2025, equivalent to roughly KSh 3.3 billion per day.
Customers have been previously encouraged to continue using Safaricom services consistently and maintain good repayment habits to improve their chances of qualifying for a higher limit.
