NORMAL, Ala. (WHNT) — Alabama A&M University homecoming game versus the Grambling State Tigers brought alumni from all generations back to campus for the annual game and the tailgate festivities.
“On the hill, where it’s real, this is how we do it. Bulldog-style,” one fan shouted.
The highlight of the game is indeed the famous tailgate. It’s a gathering that connects generations of alumni back to campus.
“The tailgating experience is part of the fabric of a (historically Black colleges or university),” said Jamal Ali, who now works at Alabama A&M.
Ali said that he has spent nearly his entire life enjoying the tailgate traditions. His mother first brought him to the stadium for homecoming when he was just 8 years old.
“She knew how important it was for me every year. My birthday, the game coincides with that, and so she knew it was important to me as a little boy, and she would make sure I came to homecoming and Magic City Classic. So it’s bigger than just a game for me. I live this,” Ali explained.
Melissa Presnell graduated from Alabama A&M in 1988 but has come back every year because the tradition now involves her entire family.
“I came here in 1984, left in 88, and it's been great ever since,” said Presnell. “And it just enlightens my life. My mother-in-law is the grand marshal this year, so we’re celebrating from beginning to end.”
The Alabama A&M University Bulldogs rolled past the Grambling State Tigers 61-31 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference homecoming matchup at Louis Crews Stadium on Saturday.
