DiepCity star Chrispen Nyathi has had enough of the unfair standards society holds celebrities to. The 32-year-old Zimbabwean actor is speaking out, arguing that public figures are constantly pressured to project wealth they may not actually have.
Best known for his role as Pastor Charleston on the popular South African television drama DiepCity, Nyathi told Daily Sun that fame does not come with a bottomless bank account. He believes the public often assumes that because someone appears on screen, they must be living lavishly, and anything less becomes a source of ridicule.
The cost of being in the public eye
According to Daily Sun, Nyathi shared that he was personally mocked for choosing to shop at a particular retail clothing store. People questioned his choice without any knowledge of his earnings or his personal financial situation, and the experience left him genuinely hurt. He pointed out that no one should have to justify where they buy their clothes simply because they are recognisable.
He also noted that fans sometimes react with visible shock when they spot celebrities doing something as routine as walking to a nearby shop. In his view, public figures are still ordinary people with bills to pay, budgets to manage and everyday errands to run.
Beyond the embarrassment, Nyathi raised a more serious concern: the mental health toll these pressures can take. He argued that some celebrities fall into depression because they feel trapped between what they can genuinely afford and what the public expects them to flaunt.
Linda Sebezo also faced similar criticism
Nyathi is not alone in navigating this kind of scrutiny. Veteran actress Linda Sebezo, known for her work on Isitha: The Enemy, found herself at the centre of similar mockery after she was spotted doing her grocery shopping at a popular supermarket. Sebezo addressed the criticism directly on social media, making clear that she lives simply and is unbothered by public opinion on the matter.
Both situations point to a broader pattern in which South African and Zimbabwean celebrities face judgment the moment their daily choices do not align with the glamorous image their fans have constructed for them.
Nyathi's message is straightforward: celebrities deserve the room to live within their means, make ordinary choices and move through the world without having to perform wealth for an audience. Fame, he insists, should not rob anyone of that basic freedom.
Chrispen Nyathi spoke up against mocking of Zimbabweans
Chrispen Nyathi has criticised jokes aimed at Zimbabweans, saying phrases used to mock the country can damage how its people are viewed.
The DiepCity star says Zimbabweans are often made to feel ashamed of their roots, despite many making meaningful contributions across Africa.
