October the 20th, 2026 – HŽ is set to invest a fortune in the country’s future railway plans, with multiple Croatian cities covered by the plans.
HŽ Passenger Transport has issued a tender estimated to stand at a whopping €7.4 million excluding VAT for the arrangement and modernisation of six workshops for the maintenance of trains across the country. Poslovni reports that more specifically speaking, these will be located in Vinkovci, Solin, Osijek, Pula and Varaždin. The tender was published on Monday in the Electronic Public Procurement Notice, and offers can be submitted until the 26th of November.
According to the tender documentation, the most money is planned for Solin, where two workshops will be arranged for €2.73 million. For Osijek the estimate is €1.59 million, Varaždin €1.48 million, Vinkovci €998,000, and for Pula €606,000. At all those locations construction, electrical and mechanical works are planned, as well as the procurement and installation of equipment for the maintenance of trains.
For example, for one of the Solin workshops the project states that it is in poor condition and that it needs to be adapted for the maintenance of existing and new trains. Therefore inspection channels for examining trains from below and a platform for inspecting equipment on the roof will be made in it, and the roof, floor and lighting will also be renewed.
The works will be carried out gradually, beginning in January 2027 and continuing until January 2028, and at each workshop they should last 119 days. First in line are Vinkovci, which will take place from the 12th of January to the 10th of May 2027, and the final one is Varaždin, where the works should finish on the 3rd of January 2028, should all go as planned.
The deadlines have (at least according to the documentation) been set so that too many workshops don’t end up being closed at the same time and so that trains can be regularly maintained even during the works. Completed parts of the halls can be returned to use after they pass expert supervision. The most advantageous offer will be selected according to price and quality, and one of the criteria is also the length of the warranty period, which must not be shorter than two years. Bidders can compete for one, several or all locations.
