JPMorgan Chase has expanded its JPM Coin deposit token to the Ethereum mainnet, giving approved institutional clients another public blockchain for around-the-clock dollar transfers, securities settlement and collateral payments.
Summary
- JPMorgan has announced Ethereum support for JPM Coin, allowing approved institutions to transfer tokenized dollar deposits directly.
- The bank chose Ethereum for its established liquidity, tokenized asset activity and existing institutional client demand.
- JPM Coin represents commercial bank deposits and remains restricted to approved customers despite operating on public blockchains.
- The Ethereum launch follows JPM Coin’s November 2025 debut on Base, where institutions tested round-the-clock settlement.
- JPMorgan has separately proposed bringing JPMD to Canton, with technical integration planned in phases during 2026.
According to an October 19 Bloomberg report, the bank is making JPM Coin available on Ethereum after launching the deposit token on Coinbase’s Base network in November 2025. The latest expansion gives eligible clients access to a network already used by financial institutions and cryptocurrency businesses for tokenized assets.
JPM Coin, which carries the ticker JPMD, represents US dollar deposits held at JPMorgan. The token allows participating customers to transfer funds in seconds without waiting for conventional banking hours.

The launch is intended for institutional payments and settlement activity, not public cryptocurrency trading. JPMorgan will continue restricting access to approved customers even though the underlying blockchain is open to other users.
JPM Coin reaches Ethereum after its initial Base launch
JPMorgan’s Ethereum rollout follows nearly a year of activity on Base, the Ethereum Layer 2 network developed by Coinbase.
In November 2025, the bank made JPMD available to institutional clients after completing a proof-of-concept that began in June. Coinbase, Mastercard and digital asset trading firm B2C2 participated in the testing process.
The companies completed transactions involving the issuance and redemption of JPM Coin, demonstrating how dollar deposits could move between conventional banking infrastructure and blockchain wallets. JPMorgan described the service as supporting near-instant transfers and continuous settlement for qualified participants.
At the time, crypto.news reported the Base launch, including the bank’s plans to support more public blockchain networks. The October Ethereum expansion follows that previously announced direction.
Base and Ethereum mainnet are related but separate blockchain networks. Base processes transactions through its own Layer 2 infrastructure, while Ethereum mainnet operates as the underlying Layer 1 network.
JPMorgan’s decision brings its deposit token directly onto Ethereum, where a range of investment products, tokenized securities and financial applications already operate. The bank has not disclosed how many customers will initially use JPMD on mainnet or how much of the token will be issued through the new deployment.
In a statement distributed Monday, Kinexys described Ethereum’s established on-chain liquidity and tokenized asset activity as reasons for choosing the network. The bank’s public comments identify the existing institutional ecosystem as a factor in its decision.
JPMorgan targets payments, securities settlement and collateral
JPMorgan expects cryptocurrency businesses and traditional financial institutions to use JPM Coin for different types of transactions.
Emma Landriault, global head of Kinexys Labs, told Bloomberg that cryptocurrency companies could use JPMD to make payments through blockchain infrastructure. Financial institutions could use the token to settle trades or provide collateral for transactions involving tokenized assets.
Settlement refers to the completion of a financial transaction, when the asset and corresponding payment are delivered to the relevant parties. In conventional markets, different payment systems and operating schedules can complicate transactions that involve participants in several jurisdictions.
Using tokenized bank deposits allows approved institutions to transfer a digital representation of money through compatible blockchain wallets. JPMorgan’s product combines those transfers with the bank’s existing deposit and payment arrangements.
The bank’s official product documentation describes payments, collateral transfers and transaction settlement as supported uses of JPM Coin. Clients access the service through Blockchain Deposit Accounts, which connect ordinary bank balances with corresponding blockchain-based deposits.
Under this arrangement, a qualifying customer can exchange eligible balances for JPMD and redeem the token through JPMorgan’s infrastructure. The bank manages the relationship between the digital token and the corresponding commercial bank deposit.
The product is designed to support programmable transactions, allowing approved users to establish payment instructions that work with blockchain-based systems. Those capabilities could be used in transactions involving tokenized investment products, although access still depends on the relevant financial institutions and platforms.
The Ethereum announcement does not identify a particular securities exchange or clearinghouse that has newly agreed to accept JPMD as collateral. It establishes the bank’s expansion to the network and describes the intended institutional applications.
JPM Coin remains restricted despite Ethereum’s public access
Ethereum allows users to send transactions, deploy applications and interact with smart contracts without requiring membership in a private banking network.
JPM Coin operates under a different access model because it represents deposits issued by JPMorgan. The bank limits the token to approved institutional clients that satisfy its account and compliance requirements.
The distinction separates JPMD from cryptocurrencies that anyone can purchase and transfer through ordinary public wallets. A token can operate on a public blockchain while retaining restrictions on who may legally or technically hold it.
JPMorgan identifies JPM Coin as commercial bank money in tokenized form. Its value comes from the corresponding deposit obligation of JPMorgan, making the bank’s credit standing and the terms of the deposit relationship relevant to customers.
The token is not a public stablecoin available for unrestricted circulation, even though both products can represent dollar-denominated value on a blockchain. JPMorgan’s documentation identifies deposit-account infrastructure and bank-managed redemption arrangements as central parts of the product.
The bank’s original Base announcement described institutional customers as the intended participants. Its October Ethereum launch maintains that limitation rather than opening JPMD to ordinary cryptocurrency investors.
JPMorgan’s public materials warn users to verify the official token contract details because unrelated assets may use similar names on blockchain networks. The documents available for this report did not establish an Ethereum mainnet contract address that could be independently checked against the October deployment.
The bank has not released a mainnet transaction total, circulating JPMD balance or confirmed count of active Ethereum users in the announcements reviewed.
Ethereum already supports JPMorgan’s tokenized investment funds
JPMorgan had established a separate presence on Ethereum before bringing its deposit token to mainnet.
In December 2025, the bank’s asset management business introduced its first tokenized money market fund on Ethereum, initially backed by $100 million of internal capital. The product was designed to give institutional investors access to a fund using blockchain-based records of ownership.
The Ethereum money market launch covered an investment product, not JPM Coin itself. Money market fund tokens represent interests in an underlying investment portfolio, while JPMD represents qualifying commercial bank deposits.
In May 2026, J.P. Morgan Asset Management introduced a second tokenized money market fund called JLTXX. The fund invests in government money market instruments and was designed with the reserve requirements of eligible stablecoin issuers in mind.
According to the asset manager’s May 13 announcement, JPMorgan committed $100 million to the new fund at launch. Qualified investors could subscribe through the Morgan Money platform and receive tokenized fund interests at their blockchain addresses.
The fund’s assets and investor eligibility rules are separate from JPM Coin’s deposit-token arrangements. Neither the launch investment nor the tokenized fund’s total assets should be counted as JPMD already circulating on Ethereum.
JPMorgan’s Kinexys business has continued developing infrastructure for payments and tokenized financial transactions. In its October announcement, the bank said the platform had processed more than $4 trillion in cumulative transactions and was averaging approximately $7 billion a day.
Those figures concern Kinexys’s operations as a whole and should not be presented as Ethereum mainnet JPM Coin volume. The bank has not disclosed the portion attributable to JPMD transactions on the newly supported network.
Canton Network integration remains a separate planned rollout
Beyond Ethereum and Base, JPMorgan has been working with Digital Asset to bring JPM Coin to the Canton Network, which focuses on institutional financial transactions and privacy.
On January 7, 2026, Digital Asset and Kinexys announced plans to issue JPMD natively on Canton. The proposal covers the issuance, transfer and redemption of the deposit token within a blockchain environment designed for regulated financial institutions.
The planned Canton integration followed the November Base launch, giving the bank a separate path for supporting institutions that require additional transaction privacy.
Canton’s architecture allows financial participants to coordinate transactions while restricting the visibility of sensitive information. Digital Asset has positioned the network for use cases involving institutional securities, payments and collateral management.
The January agreement described a phased integration through 2026, beginning with the technical and business infrastructure needed for native JPMD issuance and redemption.
Digital Asset and JPMorgan said the collaboration could later consider additional Kinexys products, including Blockchain Deposit Accounts. The announcement did not confirm that every proposed service had already entered production.
Naveen Mallela, global co-head of Kinexys, said at the time that the planned Canton integration would combine bank-issued deposits with near-real-time blockchain settlement. The companies did not provide a specific date for a completed public launch.
The October Ethereum expansion has been announced separately from that Canton development. The bank’s January release remains a statement of intent concerning phased Canton deployment, and no completed Canton mainnet launch was established by the materials reviewed.
