Ons Jabeur’s ascent in professional tennis started far from the game’s most hallowed academies. She grew up in Tunisia, where she had less access to tennis courts and had to make do with what she could find, including temporary hotel courts.
Her early journey was one of patience, consistent practice and a willingness to keep trying in a sport where opportunities didn’t always come easily. There was a family behind that ambition, a family willing to make great sacrifices. Supported by her parents and siblings, Jabeur was able to continue developing her game, and her creativity and determination helped her to develop a style that stood apart. She became a trailblazer for Arab and African women in tennis with her later Grand Slam finals appearances.
How family sacrifices shaped Ons Jabeur’s tennis careerJabeur’s early development depended on more than natural talent. Her mother, Samira, introduced her to tennis when she was a young child, taking her to courts at hotels in Hammam Sousse. With dedicated tennis facilities limited in her surroundings, these spaces became an important starting point for a player who would eventually compete against the world’s best.
Her family also helped her access more specialised coaching. Training sometimes meant travelling considerable distances, requiring time, planning and financial commitment, and these efforts helped Jabeur build the foundations of her game before she moved to Tunis as a teenager to pursue more structured training.
How Ons Jabeur rose from Tunisia’s hotel courts
It took years of development and adaptation to get Jabeur from the hotel courts to the international stage.
As a junior, she would sometimes play against boys, gaining experience in an environment where opportunities for girls weren’t so advanced, and those early experiences helped her forge a competitive game founded on movement, touch and tactical awareness. She moved to Tunis at 12 to get access to more specialised tennis training. That move was a major step toward a professional career and a more structured sporting environment, and it wasn’t without its challenges: Players from countries with fewer established pathways to the professional game can struggle to find sponsorship, consistent competition and the same visibility as athletes from traditional tennis powerhouses. But Jabeur’s style was unique and not just all about power, with her use of drop shots, slices, change of pace and surprise angles making her hard to read. The variety became an asset, allowing her to face opponents used to more predictable baseline skirmishes.
How Ons Jabeur inspired a new generation of tennis players
Jabeur’s influence extends beyond rankings and tournament results. Her success has given young athletes across Tunisia, North Africa and the wider Arab world a prominent example of someone who reached the highest levels of tennis without beginning in one of the sport’s traditional centres.
Her journey has helped challenge assumptions about where elite players can emerge.Ultimately, her story is not simply about reaching Grand Slam finals. It is about the family support that helped sustain an early dream, the determination required to overcome barriers and the confidence to preserve an individual playing identity. From temporary hotel courts in Tunisia to the biggest stages in tennis, Ons Jabeur has shown a generation of aspiring athletes that the route to the top does not have to begin in a traditional tennis powerhouse.
