Jordan Elliott’s release from the Tennessee Titans following a reported firearm incident at the team facility has sparked debate across the NFL. Former NFL tight end Shannon Sharpe recently addressed the situation on Nightcap.
During the show, Joe Johnson asked Sharpe how he would react if someone told him Elliott had a firearm and suggested he speak with the defensive tackle as the team’s head coach. Sharpe made it clear he wouldn’t put himself in that situation, saying he would contact the police rather than try to handle it personally.
“Man, y’all better call the police,” Sharpe said. “Man, lock my door, man.”
Sharpe said coaches don’t get manuals on how to handle a player carrying a firearm, so he wouldn’t risk putting himself in danger. He then expressed his disbelief that the situation had escalated to the point where Elliott reportedly retrieved a firearm following an argument with a teammate.
“He went and got that stick for real, Joe and Ocho,” Sharpe said.
Johnson then shared his own theory about the incident.
“I’m telling y’all, man, it had to be about some money,” he said. “That man had to get threatened. He’s gonna make a statement about this.”
The incident reportedly occurred on October 15, following an altercation between Elliott and offensive tackle JC Latham during Titans practice. The disagreement allegedly continued after practice, with Elliott reportedly heading to the players’ parking garage to retrieve a firearm from his vehicle.
Defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers intervened and helped de-escalate the situation before anyone was injured. The Titans subsequently released Elliott on October 20.
Robert Saleh’s Response to the Incident
Titans head coach Robert Saleh later addressed the situation, acknowledging the seriousness of Elliott’s actions while defending his character. Saleh described the episode as a major lapse in judgment and suggested that it could have been a cry for help.
He also emphasized that Elliott had been a good teammate and a hard worker.
“My message to 31 other teams would be if you need a h*ll of a run-stopping D-tackle that can help you on a playoff run, give me a call and I’ll tell you everything you need to know about him,” he said.
Saleh said the organization tried to ensure Elliott received support before deciding to release him.
